You are here:Products > Car & Auto Crashproof Your Kids (Paperback)Make your teen a safer, smarter driver.
Give yourself the necessary tools to teach your teen to driveWe've produced an award-winning, critically acclaimed driver's ed DVD, Rules of the Road, and we love this book. Author Timothy C. Smith has done his homework. The book is entertaining, full of engaging anecdotal stories, and tried-and-true methods for helping parents teach their kids how to drive. Spending quality time with your teen behind the wheel is one of the most successful and sure-fire ways to help them avoid a disastrous accident. The statistics are sobering: Fifty-eight percent of first-time drivers will be involved in car crash within a year of getting their license. Many of those crashes will be fatal. Parental involvment can reduce this by up to 30 percent. Crashproof Your Kids picks up where driver's ed leaves offWe're the first to admit that no one training material or method is 100% sufficient for teaching teens to drive. This is the most dangerous activity that most of us will ever engage in. It takes more than a little classroom study and a few hours of supervised practice. It takes a lot of practice! By controlling the learning environment, you can safely teach your kids to driveResearchers know that humans typically learn best from their mistakes. The problem with learning to drive is how to allow your teenager to make mistakes without injuring themselves or someone else. That's what Mr. Smith's book is all about: A step-by-step plan to develop your teen's braking, car control, and defensive driving skills without injuring anyone and without strangling each other. Crashproof Your Kids provides the blueprint for successful in-car instructionThe purpose of this well-written book is to provide a roadmap for successful teaching lessons. Many parents fear endless arguments with their teen. This book is designed to help you through this difficult time. Let's face it: your kids think they can learn to drive better than you do within 4 days. They have little interest in hanging out in the car with you for the 50+ hours of supervised practice that is required to become a safe driver. Crashproof Your Kids has a step-by-step plan of how you can effectively use the time behind the wheel to teach your kids how to be smart, safe, and defensive drivers.
An excerpt from Crashproof Your Kids"Is there anything scarier to a parent than handing over the car keys to a teenager? Remember what it was like when we got our licenses? We sat through classes that droned on about traffic regulations, watched some gruesome crash films, and spent a couple of hours driving with our fourth-period geography teacher. Then we got our licenses, and away we went. That doesn’t cut it anymore. Your teen faces far more dangers on the road than we did: snarled rush-hour traffic, road rage, multiple distractions, and increased mind-altering substances, just to name a few. It’s no wonder that the leading cause of death for teenagers today is not guns, suicide, or drugs. It’s car crashes. Consider these sobering statistics:
Notice that I did not use the word accidents. We’re talking about crashes. An accident is when a meteor falls on your car. When your son bangs up your car because the guy in front of him stopped quickly or because the road was slippery, it’s no accident. Car crashes are almost never accidents, and the distinction is an important one, because the vast majority of crashes are caused by driver error, and they’re preventable." $13.95
