Yes, this product requires that you install a tiny piece of software on your computer. The software is Windows-only and merely resizes copies of your photos (your originals won't be harmed) and transfers them to the ornament via the included USB port.

Christmas photo ornament is easy to use

Yes, there is software to install (Windows only). But, it takes about 3 minutes and no, it will not take over your computer and send copies of your ranting instant messaging sessions to your boss. The software is very easy to use. Simply find the photos you want to put onto the ornament and hit the "transfer" button. That's really all there is to it. Oh, you will have to connect the USB cable from the ornament to your computer (cable is included).

Several viewing modes included

You can set your Digital Photo Ornament to show one photo (perhaps of a new baby) or to cycle through a slideshow of photos (perhaps it's a slideshow of 50 photos of the same baby in the same outfit doing basically the same thing in each photo). It even has the ability to shut itself off in a set number of minutes in order to save battery power (requires 2 AAA which are not included).

A few notes about image quality on your Christmas Photo Ornament

Please keep in mind that the image quality of the mini LCD screen on the Digital Christmas Photo Ornament is not the same as your high definition television (it doesn't cost nearly as much, either). The image quality is pretty darned good considering it's an ornament, but don't expect it to look like an iPhone screen. The pictures look like they were taken on a cell phone camera. The point of the Digital Photo Ornament isn't to replace real photographs or replace an LCD picture frame. The point is to hang some wonderful holiday moments on your tree in a decorative fashion. And in that respect, the Digital Photo Ornament kicks the iPhone's butt.

Q: what is the memory capacity. I know it shows 50 photos, but I'm assuming it depends on the size of the photo as to how many will fit on the ornament.
A: The Digital Photo Ornament can store 8 MB.

Q: What resolution is the screen? (See previous question about Linux/MacOS DIY :-) )
A: The resolution on the Digital Photo Ornament is 128x128 dpi.

Q: Does this product work with Apple Computers?
A: No, the Digital Photo Ornament will not work with Apple computers. It is for Windows only.

Q: can the installation disk be used on two computers?
A: Yes. It is possible to install the ornament's software on more than one computer.

Q: got the disk installed... cannot figure out how to download photo's. No drop down help menu can you afvise? TIA
A: Without more detail about the problem you are having, the best advice we can give is to refer to the instruction manual that comes with the Digital Photo Ornament.

Q: How long would it be before i have to change the AAA battery, assuming manual mode? I just don't want to buy something if I have to replace the battery very often.
A: Unfortunately, the battery life was not tested by the manufacturer. To prolong battery life, you could use high-quality batteries such as Duracell Alkaline rather than rechargeable batteries.

Q: My computer will not read the software disk included. Is there a place online where I can download the software?
A: The Digital Photo Ornament software is not available for download online.

Q: Ok...I can't figure out how to open it to put the batteries in...did you have to use a lot of force to get the ornament to open? It is not opening with a decent amount of force...! Is there a trick?!
A: No tricks! To insert batteries into the Digital Photo Ornament, turn the top cap counter-clockwise and remove the center post. Unscrew the battery compartment's door. Replace with new (AAA) batteries. Make sure the batteries are inserted correctly (positive to positive and negative to negative).
