Strangest Festivals in the U.S. - October

I started to make a list of strange, often ridiculous festivals held throughout the U.S., but then I realized something. There are an awful lot of them. So I narrowed it down a bit, and came up with the strangest festivals for October. The following festivals stand out in stark contrast to the typical “Apples and Hayrides” festivals that you usually see in October.

vampire-masquerade-ball.jpg
Festival of the Dead - October 1-31 - Not surprisingly, this one’s located in Salem Massachusetts. Activities include ghost-hunting, a psychic fair, and a vampire masquerade ball.

Fantasia Fair - October 14-21 - The Fantasia Fair is a week-long transgender event held at a GLBT-friendly resort on the tip of Cape Cod.

outhouse-festival.jpg

Annual Outhouse Festival and Auction - October 13 - Located a mere 60 miles from the Vat19 headquarters, this event at the American Farm Heritage Museum sounds pretty crappy. Of course, if you’ve ever wanted a trucker hat advertising such a museum, you’re in luck.

Eerie Horror Film Festival - October 10-14 – Since 2004, horror movie fans and creators have been gathering in Eerie to screen scary movies and meet B-movie actors.

coffin-races.jpg

Emma Crawford Festival Coffin Races - October 27 – The title’s pretty self-explanatory, but there’s a great story behind the festival. Tuberculosis, death, and dying promises serve as a backdrop to the races.

goats-music-more.jpg

Goats, Music, and More - October 12-13, Lewisburg, Tennessee – There’s just one thing I don’t understand. If you have goats and music, what more could you want?

turkey-trot.jpg

Yellville Annual Turkey Trot - October 12-13 - The folks in Yellville, Arkansas, are serious about their turkeys. Don’t miss the opportunity to listen to the musical stylings of a fellow by the name of “Ozark Roy”.

globesity.JPG

The Globesity Festival - October 22-28 – New York City’s Globesity Festival focuses on overconsumption around the world.

wooly-worm-kid.jpg

Wooly Worm Festival - October 20-21 – In North Carolina, they have a very special relationship with wooly worms. Apparently, they can forecast the weather based on wooly worms and their ability to climb up strings.

fireant-firetruck.jpg

Fireant Festival - October 13 – In Marshall, Texas, they spend one day each year in celebration of the Fireant.

The Loris Bog Off Festival - October 20 – In the town of Loris, South Carolina, everyone and their dog believes that he or she can prepare the best “chicken bog” (whatever that is). On October 20th, someone will emerge victorious as the Chicken Bog Champ.

So, if you need something to do in October, it looks like there’s no shortage of new experiences to be had.
