Degas was known for his love of painting dancers. Ballets were extremely popular in France, and Degas spent hours studying the movement of ballerinas in their studios.

Degas shocked critics by painting the ballerinas resting, yawning, adjusting their costumes, and scratching their backs. Critics were used to seeing only "beautiful" portraits of famous ballerinas.
