"...combine[s] excellent arts and crafts instruction with an appreciation of the importance of hands-on artistry from cultures around the world. " --M.E. Snodgrass, Video Librarian
Host/instructor Cherie Lynn's multicultural projects in World Art 2 (see review of World Art in VL-9/04), tailored for ages 10-up, combine excellent arts and crafts instruction with an appreciation of the importance of hands-on artistry from cultures around the world.
Featuring 11 projects, including an African face mask, Chinese dragon, Navajo Indian blanket, Oaxacan foil animal, Papunya dot painting (Australia), and Tibetan sand mandala, the program offers step-by-step tutorials for each project, as well as printable patterns, materials lists, and instructions.
Throughout, budding artists are encouraged to choose favorite color combinations and bring their own sense of personal expression to creating each project, while pop-up animation offers a greater understanding of the countries and cultures that spawned these beautiful works. Highly recommended.
"This well-organized program is an excellent resource for classrooms and youth programs." --Candace Smith, Booklist
Instructor Cherie Lynn mixes culture with craft as she walks students through 11 projects inspired by folk-art techniques.
Lynn introduces each of the projects (ranging from Tibetan sand paintings to African reliquaries) by showing examples of original pieces and giving background on the people who practice the craft.
Necessary supplies are listed, and then Lynn painstakingly demonstrates the step-by-step procedures, with only slight telescoping.
Excellent camera work allows students and teachers to follow Lynn's clear instructions and watch the project unfold. Animated pop-up screens reinforce safety tips and terminology. The DVD menu gives viewers the option either to play through a selected project or preview the necessary materials and basic instructions. This well-organized program is an excellent resource for classrooms and youth programs.
Printable patterns and instructions are also available using the DVD and a computer. See also World Art [BKL N 1 04].
