We have introduced the Rules of the Road Business Edition in response to an overwhelming number of driving and traffic schools that wish to incorporate the Rules of the Road into their curriculums.
The purpose of the Business Edition is to provide a cost-effective way for commercial entities to license the Rules of the Road for use in their programs. Instead of creating separate licensing deals with every school, we have created this Business Edition.
What rights does the Business Edition give me?
The Business edition includes a public performance rights license. It gives you the right to display the contents of the DVD to the public. There are no restrictions on the number of times you can display the DVD or to the number of people to whom you can showcase the product.
What restrictions are there?
The public performance license only applies to the DVD that you purchase. There are no restrictions on the number of times you can display the DVD or to the number of people to whom you can showcase the product. You cannot, however, make any additional copies of the DVD. If, for instance, you have 3 physical locations, then you will have to purchase 3 copies.
I have 5 physical locations where I teach driving classes, do I need to purchase 5 copies of the Business Edition?
Yes. Each physical copy is licensed with public performance rights and that license is only good for that physical copy.
Why can't I use the cheaper version?
Because we're an evil corporation! Muhahaha.
Seriously, though, it's a matter of use. The standard version is priced for home use in which one family uses the product. Your driving/traffic school, however, is making money from the use of our product. Your school is selling a service (instruction) to your students. You are being paid for each student that comes through your program and they are benefiting from viewing our DVD. Therefore, it only makes sense that we should be compensated in some respect for each student that benefits from our DVD. However, it is logistically infeasible for us to charge a fee for each student that uses/views the DVD. So, we've developed this license model that is easy to understand and that is reasonably priced. Since this license has no restrictions on the number of students that can view the program, the price is quite fair. Suppose that your school serves 500 students per year. After one year, you've paid $0.27 per student who watched our program.
What if I lose my copy? Do I have to pay again?
No, we will provide one free replacement copy. Please contact us and we will handle your replacement.
I just want a copy for my teenager. Do I need this version?
No, the standard version of the Rules of the Road is licensed for home use only and that is what you need.
How will you know if I purchased the standard version and used it in my school?
We wouldn't. However, if someone were to alert us to an infringement of the license (perhaps an unhappy customer or disgruntled employee), our statutory recourse is $250,000 per incident in which a violation occurred.
How do I receive a copy of the license?
When you purchase the Business Edition, a license agreement will be included with your copy of the DVD. This is all you need to prove that you have the legal right to use the DVD in a business setting.
What if I don't want to show the DVD to my students, but I want them to be able to 'check it out' or view in a media room, do I still need the Business Edition?
Yes. If your students are paying for your instruction and in the course of their instruction, they view the DVD, you need to purchase the Business Edition.
I work for a High School. Do I need the Business edition?
No. You may purchase the standard edition for use in your classroom.
Why doesn't a High School have to purchase the Business Edition?
A highschool is not a business and they are not charging their students for their instruction. Although a case could be made that a private high school is charging for the instruction, the reality is that a private high school is a not-for-profit entity.
I would like to resell the Rules of the Road to my students. How do I go about doing this and which version do I need?
If you are interested in becoming a distributor of Rules of the Road, please use our contact form to get in touch with us. |
