We've done some research, and an easy and common way to clean shells is to soak them in diluted bleach (equal parts water and bleach) for 10 minutes to a couple hours, depending on how dirty the shell is. Clean off the surface and then brush on some diluted mineral oil or baby oil to give it a nice shine.
