Overview:

The Caribbean conch shell is one of the most widely recognized sea shells, and for good reason: it is quite beautiful. Its spiral shape and bright pink inside are very alluring.

The mollusks which inhabit these shells can be quite feisty (as in the West Indian Fighting Conch) and tasty (as in Conch Fritters and Conch Chowder).

Pink Caribbean Conch Shell

Currently, we are selling a 9 "-10" Caribbean conch shell. Conch shells, pronounced "konk" or "konch" are, in science-speak, marine gastropods. Basically, a kind of nasty-looking mollusk lives inside of it. Only six species exists in the Caribbean and are normally found amongst beds of sea grass in warm, tropical waters.

Conch Facts

  • Conches do not grow their flared lip until they reach sexual maturity.
  • At least one culture is known to have used the conch shell as a hand weapon (by inserting the hand into the aperture).
  • Occassionally, conch shells are used as a building material, either in place of bricks or as bulk for landfill.
  • Conches can be played as a crude bugle (only producing one note).
  • The Conch shell played a primary role in the William Golding novel Lord of the Flies.

About our Seashells

We scoured the world looking for the highest quality seashells to bring to our customers. This required more than buying a really large net, throwing it in the ocean, and seeing what we came up with. Because the last time we did this on vacation and decided to try to keep that conch shell, we got a lot more than we bargained for (think rotting garbage type smell).

Cleaning and Polishing

Because seashells come from The Ocean (that's not a nightclub in Miami) and they used to be the home for some sort of organism, they have to be cleaned and polished before they can be brought home. It's a labor intensive process that must be done by experts. Cleaning and polishing by amateurs results in horrible looking shells with jagged edges and lots of dirty spots. We found experts who have been doing this for decades. And that's why these shells look so darned good!

Careful Packing and Shipping

It's imperative that seashells are packaged properly to avoid damage in shipping. We take great care and pride in ensuring that your delivery arrives completely unharmed. Your shells are wrapped in multiple layers of bubble wrap and then surrounded by a generous amount of soft padding. Your wrapped shell will always arrive in a box significantly larger than the shell itself to allow for the maximum in padding and protection.

Q: is this the kind that can be used as horn, sort of like in "lord of the flies"?
A: Yes, and as long as you hold the conch, you are allowed to speak at the next corporate meeting. It is incredibly difficult to play the conch as a bugle. It's probably easier to use a conch shell as a weapon (as is depicted in ancient Mayan culture).

Q: what lives inside a conch?
A: A conch is a sea-dwelling mollusk that makes it home inside the conch shell. So, a conch lives inside a conch shell. Our conch shells, however, are vacant. You'll be glad as a conch doesn't smell all that good.

A: Unfortunately, we have just one size of conch shells, and they range from about 20-25 cm. Best of luck in finding what you're looking for!

Q: I am a pro musician looking for conchs to play as musical instruments - are yours completely intact? There can't be any holes (except for the mouthpiece) for it to be played. Do you ship to Canada?
A: The conch shells have been cleaned and polished as necessary, but we don't see evidence of any extra holes. We ship worldwide.

Q: It looks as though the edges are not cut but I want to be sure before I buy mine. Are they just polished and left natural? Thanks!
A: Like all of our shells, the conch shell is cleaned, polished, and left natural.

Q: How old are conch shells?
A: The conch shells vary in age, but to the best of our knowledge, all are relatively new.

Q: need iformation on how to clean and conch. Brought home from Mexico and wish to know how to take care of them properly.
A: Wow, you went all the way to Mexico for a Conch Shell when you could have gotten one right here at Vat19.com! We've done some research, and an easy and common way to clean shells is to soak them in diluted bleach (equal parts water and bleach) for 10 minutes to a couple hours, depending on how dirty the shell is. Clean off the surface and then brush on some diluted mineral oil or baby oil to give it a nice shine.

Q: What sort of price range do you sell your pink conches for?
A: We have discontinued the pink conch shells and have no plans to carry them in the future. We appreciate your interest and apologize for any inconvenience!

A: We're assuming that if you know there are 3 parts that you are just testing us. In simple terms, the shell itself is comprised of the mantle, lip, and spines.
