Trash: Bread Shoes

|

breadshoes.jpg

These Bread Shoes have been all over the blogosphere lately, and a lot of people think they are totally awesome. In fact, they're selling out on the manufacturer's website. And I ask, "Why?"

People, these are loaves of bread that have a chunk cut off the back and part of the insides pulled out of the "toe" area. Anyone could do this. Actually, my 5-year-old cousin did nearly the same thing with dinner rolls this past weekend. Why are people paying 62 euros, or roughly $93, for a pair of bread shoes that you can't even wear? The website itself says, "Not wearable on feet". And I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to eat them, either, as they do not appear to be packaged in an airtight container. So, you get a pair of stale bread shoes that you ... display on your mantle?

I'm bummed, man. This is a total waste of a perfectly delicious loaf of bread.

Treasure: Vintage Belt Floor Mat

|

Belt Floor Mat Rug.jpg

By just looking at the photo above, you're probably wondering what the heck that is. You might be thinking it is something made out of wood. Wrong! It's a really awesome floor mat made out of vintage leather belts. Very cool and very unique. And at $688.00 it's also very expensive.

Each one is made-to-order and is one-of-a-kind. Assuming desk chairs could roll easily on it, this would be really neat for an office. Heck, it'd be neat anywhere you use it!

Treasure: TV Easel

|

tv_easel.jpg

Holy cannoli, I am in love with this TV stand. I feel bad calling it a TV stand, because that sounds so boring and commonplace, and this beauty is neither of those.

This TV Easel (name still doesn't do it justice) is constructed of solid hardwood and is height-adjustable to fit flat-screen televisions from 42" - 60". It's tough to tell from the photo, but there is a shelf on the bottom for your DVD player, cable box, and/or gaming console. It also has locking wheels on the bottom, and could also be used for a mirror or actual artwork. Oh, and the antiqued ebony finish is hand-applied in a four-step process.

So, you know what all this means, right? It's pricey. $995 at Restoration Hardware. Oh if I had $1000 to spare...

Trash: Chair Socks

|

chair-socks-4.jpg

Initially, I thought these Chair Socks by Chris & Ruby were a really cute idea. They're way more interesting and fashion-forward than those beige stick-ums you usually put on the bottom of chair legs, right? And it'd be a good way to add a little decorative kick to your dining area, right?

Then I looked at my dining chairs and imagined them with these pink "Flashdance" socks on them, and I realized how lame it would look. It's like putting a scarf around your refrigerator or something. It just doesn't go.

Treasure: Acrobatic Cabinets

|

stackedcabinets.jpg

Aren't these crazy cabinets awesome? I'm not sure if they're somehow bolted together, or if they're actually balancing one on top of the other, but either way, they're still insanely cool. They look like they're in the middle of a dance, one right out of Disney's Fantasia or Alice in Wonderland. It'd be tough to fit these into any standard decor, but I love the kooky look.

Created by artist Vincent Leman, they're available in three color combos. Here comes the buzzkill - they're $3205 per set. Yeesh!

ipodwafercase.jpg

Those aren't cookies. Those are iPod Shuffles disguised as those delicious chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla wafer cookies I so loved as a child. Don't they look awesome?!

But you know, it's almost cruel how realistic they look, isn't it? If I had an iPod Shuffle 3G, and it had one of these cases on it (preferably chocolate or strawberry), I would seriously be trying to take a bite out of it all the time. And I'd be severely disappointed when I tasted silicone and metal instead of yummy wafer-ness. Oh well, such is life.

Treasure: 1984 Fishbowl

|

fishbowl.jpg

Named after the novel 1984 by George Orwell, this futuristic fishbowl by Danny Cheung provides a little bit of well-deserved privacy for your gilled friend. The glass areas are magnified, so you can get a good look at your fish whenever he or she decides to make an appearance.

Plus, it just looks awesome, and it would go with almost any decor. You and your fishie may have to sacrifice for a while to afford it, though. It costs $430.00.

Trash: Ice Cream Sundae Speakers

|

SundaeFull1.jpg

One word: Obnoxious.

Three reasons:

1) These Ice Cream Sundae Speakers are BIG. 17" high and 17" wide. That's a heck of a lot of shelf or counter space that you're losing with these babies.

2) They're $1250.00 for a pair. I assume you're paying for excellent speakers, although the specs on the product page are jibberish to me, so I can't say for sure. But if you're enough of an audiophile to drop $1250 on speakers, do you really want them disguised as ice cream?

3) These faux sundaes don't even look good. If you want to make a great fake sundae, put a couple of "scoops" of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry together with some colorful sprinkles and a fudge drizzle. Don't build a random mound of lumpy, melty vanilla and put veins of chocolate on it. Ew.

Treasure: Crayon Rings

|

crayon rings.jpg

These Crayon Rings are pretty neat looking. You probably can't color very well while wearing them on your fingers, but they are still a fun shape. The set of 8 rings costs $50, which is a lot to spend on crayons for kids. They'd probably break quickly!

If you want to find a unique coloring gift for kids that is affordable and durable, check out Smencils Scented Colored Pencils.

Treasure: Apehanger

|

apehanger1.jpg

Maybe kids will actually be willing to hang up their own clothes if they're able to do it with these super-fun Apehangers. The clothes hang off of the ape's legs and his upright arm serves as the hook to hang him up. See?

apehanger2.jpg

Cute, no? The trouble here is the cost. At $20 per hanger, you could easily get 20 regular hangers for the same price. But those are regular hangers, and this is an eco-friendly and organic monkey hanger that can also be used as wall decoration. So, there you go.

Treasure: Bibliochase

|

bibliochase.jpg

OK, I don't know if this is actually for sale anywhere, which might frustrate those of you who may want to purchase it for yourself or as an awesome gift for a bibliophile friend of yours.

However, I could not resist posting it, because I love it. Who knows how comfortable it would actually be, but I just love the idea of sitting down and basically being surrounded by your own private little library. You can finish one book, slide it back in its slot, and then pick out another without leaving your seat! How convenient is that?

Plus, it looks cool.

Trash: Cool Shades Tape

|

stick-on sunglasses.jpg

Don't get me wrong, I think some of the new designer packing tapes that seem to be so prevalent now are kind of fun. And this tape falls into that category.

However, it also falls into the "Seriously?" category because the designers have taken it one step further and stuck the packing tape to this poor woman's face and hair. I'm thinking that's going to smart just a bit when those babies get ripped off.

The designers do state, however, that they do not recommend applying the tape "directly onto the body, as the adhesive may cause irritation to sensitive skin or damage to hair." Then why are you illustrating the product being used in that manner? Monkey see, monkey do, people.

Ridiculous High Heel Shoes

|

High heels sure have come a long way from when they were worn simply to prevent a horse rider's foot from slipping through the stirrups. Yep, high heels (shoes with raised heels...not stilettos) date all the way back to the 1500s. Eventually, shoes with high heels and pointed toes became a status symbol and more about fashion than practicality.

Clearly, these high heels are not exactly practical. Some are ridiculous, some are weird, some are absurd. All of them are unique.

Figurine High Heels
high heel figurine.jpg
While these Christian Dior high heels don't look terribly uncomfortable, a figurine as the heel is pretty weird. It's unique, but I think it leans towards weird unique instead of cool unique. Too artsy.

Lamborghini High Heels
high heel lamborghini.jpg
These Lamborghini high heels are just a concept product. The design by Tim Cooper is pretty neat, but I can't see anyone actually wearing these unless you are a model working a Lamborghini event. They remind me of those beds for little kids that are shaped like race cars. Except those beds weren't made of carbon fiber!

Brass Knuckle High Heels

I'm not sure who these crazy high heels were made for. A stripper that is about to beat the hell out of you? The metal plating on the outside is probably appealing to truckers.
