Treasure: Floating Ducks

|

floatingducks.jpg

I know that nothing can ever compare to the traditional Rubber Ducky as the perfect tub toy. However, these Floating Ducks are a cute alternative for those who prefer something a little more modern and designer-y. Yes, that's a word.

Besides being a fun floating bath toy for your kids, they can also function as room decor. The baby rests on the mom's back (so cute), and they gently rock together, exuding a calm, almost Zen-like feel. Adorable!

By the way, for those of you who just can never get enough ducks, check out the ducky selection at Vat19. We love our feathered friends!

Treasure: Wooden iPhone/iPod Dock

|

wood iphone dock.jpg

This beautiful piece - along with the iPhone itself - is going on my "I will buy all of these things when I have money to burn" list. It is yet another hand made gem I found on Etsy.

The wood is cedar, so you know it smells awesome. The design is simple, pretty - "nature chic", if you will. It is compatible with the iPhone 3g and all iPod devices. Except for the Shuffle. I have a Shuffle and nothing cool is compatible with the Shuffle.

It will set you back $78. Pricey, yes, but not completely unreasonable for a functional hand made piece.

Treasure: TV Easel

|

tv_easel.jpg

Holy cannoli, I am in love with this TV stand. I feel bad calling it a TV stand, because that sounds so boring and commonplace, and this beauty is neither of those.

This TV Easel (name still doesn't do it justice) is constructed of solid hardwood and is height-adjustable to fit flat-screen televisions from 42" - 60". It's tough to tell from the photo, but there is a shelf on the bottom for your DVD player, cable box, and/or gaming console. It also has locking wheels on the bottom, and could also be used for a mirror or actual artwork. Oh, and the antiqued ebony finish is hand-applied in a four-step process.

So, you know what all this means, right? It's pricey. $995 at Restoration Hardware. Oh if I had $1000 to spare...

Trash: Chair Socks

|

chair-socks-4.jpg

Initially, I thought these Chair Socks by Chris & Ruby were a really cute idea. They're way more interesting and fashion-forward than those beige stick-ums you usually put on the bottom of chair legs, right? And it'd be a good way to add a little decorative kick to your dining area, right?

Then I looked at my dining chairs and imagined them with these pink "Flashdance" socks on them, and I realized how lame it would look. It's like putting a scarf around your refrigerator or something. It just doesn't go.

Treasure: Acrobatic Cabinets

|

stackedcabinets.jpg

Aren't these crazy cabinets awesome? I'm not sure if they're somehow bolted together, or if they're actually balancing one on top of the other, but either way, they're still insanely cool. They look like they're in the middle of a dance, one right out of Disney's Fantasia or Alice in Wonderland. It'd be tough to fit these into any standard decor, but I love the kooky look.

Created by artist Vincent Leman, they're available in three color combos. Here comes the buzzkill - they're $3205 per set. Yeesh!

Treasure: 1984 Fishbowl

|

fishbowl.jpg

Named after the novel 1984 by George Orwell, this futuristic fishbowl by Danny Cheung provides a little bit of well-deserved privacy for your gilled friend. The glass areas are magnified, so you can get a good look at your fish whenever he or she decides to make an appearance.

Plus, it just looks awesome, and it would go with almost any decor. You and your fishie may have to sacrifice for a while to afford it, though. It costs $430.00.

Treasure: Mississippi Clock

|

mississippi clock.jpg

Most people count off the seconds one of two ways - You're either a "one thousand" counter, or you're a "Mississippi" counter. If you, like me, are a member of the latter group, this clock is for you.

Instead of displaying hours and minutes, this clock displays the seconds, all the way from "one Mississippi" to "sixty Mississippi". Fun, huh? And just so you don't get too confused, there are twelve little arrows that mark the hours.

It's simple and stylish, yet quirky enough for people to take a second look. Now I just need to figure out why the heck it costs $100...

fawn coasters.jpg

I'm a sucker for pretty much anything that has deer on it, and these Fawn Coasters by Joshua Stone are no exception. They're made of industrial felt, which seems to be all the rage right now, and the fawn is hand silk screened.

What else can I say? They're simple, peaceful, and completely adorable.

You can never have too many coaster sets, by the way. It's important to have one for every occasion. Be sure to check out the awesome selection of coaster sets and other barware over at Vat19!

Trash: Ice Cream Sundae Speakers

|

SundaeFull1.jpg

One word: Obnoxious.

Three reasons:

1) These Ice Cream Sundae Speakers are BIG. 17" high and 17" wide. That's a heck of a lot of shelf or counter space that you're losing with these babies.

2) They're $1250.00 for a pair. I assume you're paying for excellent speakers, although the specs on the product page are jibberish to me, so I can't say for sure. But if you're enough of an audiophile to drop $1250 on speakers, do you really want them disguised as ice cream?

3) These faux sundaes don't even look good. If you want to make a great fake sundae, put a couple of "scoops" of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry together with some colorful sprinkles and a fudge drizzle. Don't build a random mound of lumpy, melty vanilla and put veins of chocolate on it. Ew.

Treasure: Apehanger

|

apehanger1.jpg

Maybe kids will actually be willing to hang up their own clothes if they're able to do it with these super-fun Apehangers. The clothes hang off of the ape's legs and his upright arm serves as the hook to hang him up. See?

apehanger2.jpg

Cute, no? The trouble here is the cost. At $20 per hanger, you could easily get 20 regular hangers for the same price. But those are regular hangers, and this is an eco-friendly and organic monkey hanger that can also be used as wall decoration. So, there you go.

Treasure: Bibliochase

|

bibliochase.jpg

OK, I don't know if this is actually for sale anywhere, which might frustrate those of you who may want to purchase it for yourself or as an awesome gift for a bibliophile friend of yours.

However, I could not resist posting it, because I love it. Who knows how comfortable it would actually be, but I just love the idea of sitting down and basically being surrounded by your own private little library. You can finish one book, slide it back in its slot, and then pick out another without leaving your seat! How convenient is that?

Plus, it looks cool.

Trash: Trout Cowboy

|

troutcowboy.jpg

Am I missing something? Is there a well-known joke or story that goes along with this sculpture that I'm completely unaware of? Is this some sort of political statement on how we all should get over our differences and just get along? Or maybe a prediction on the future evolution of the trout?

Or is it simply a cowboy ... riding an oversized trout ... that has sprouted wheels?

If so, color me speechless.

Treasure: Log Bowls

|

loyallootbowl_1.jpg

"Scrap wood" never looked so good.

These beautiful Log Bowls by Loyal Loot Collective are handmade from locally reclaimed trees in Edmonton Canada. The folks at Loyal Loot, with the help of local crafts people, hand-select their trees, turn them by hand to create the smooth and even "bowl", and then finish them off with acrylic paint and a water based gloss seal.

I just love the contrast of the rough and rugged tree bark against the smooth, vibrant colors of the bowls. They're gorgeous! And versatile, too. In sizes ranging from 2-10", they would be great to hold candy, jewelry, keys, or just serve as eye-catching centerpieces.

Treasure: Frames Wallpaper

|

frames wallpaper.jpg

I am in love with this wallpaper. And that's kind of saying a lot, because I hate wallpaper in general. But seriously, this is one of the greatest ideas ever.

Initial thought: This would be perfect for a kid's room. They would always have something to color, draw, and paint on. The only trouble I see is that kids can only reach so high, so after a while they're bound to start dragging kitchen chairs or unstable boxes into their rooms to reach the higher frames. Solution? Do a chair rail around the room and only put the wallpaper on the bottom third of the wall.

Besides kid's rooms, though, this would also be great for teenagers so they can display all their funky photos in a more creative way and appealing way than, say, sticking them into a mirror or to a corkboard. And actually, this wallpaper might also be cool in a bathroom. As we've all experienced in public restrooms, people like to write and doodle on walls while they do their business, and their creations would give you something to look at / read while you're doing your business. Just be ready for some not-so-nice stuff, depending how how obscene your friends can get. That's what White-Out is for, I suppose.

Treasure: View Mirror by Jellio

|

Who hasn't stuck photos of friends or family into the edges of their bedroom mirror? I guess the idea is that it's quick, easy, and you're bound to see the photos at least once a day (more if you're narcissistic). The View Mirror by Jellio takes this idea a step further by building the photo frames into the mirror. Behold:

jellio_viewmirror.jpg

Design look a little familiar? That's right, the View Mirror is modeled after a ViewMaster reel, which I, as a child of the 80s, find completely awesome. The mirror is 24" in diameter and has 14 slots for images, just like the original ViewMaster reels. Retailing for $150.00, it's a tad steep, but I think it would make a great mirror for a child or teenager's room, or even a cool accent piece in a modern home ... or a home dedicated to 80s classics.
