Trash: Ice Cream Sundae Speakers

|

SundaeFull1.jpg

One word: Obnoxious.

Three reasons:

1) These Ice Cream Sundae Speakers are BIG. 17" high and 17" wide. That's a heck of a lot of shelf or counter space that you're losing with these babies.

2) They're $1250.00 for a pair. I assume you're paying for excellent speakers, although the specs on the product page are jibberish to me, so I can't say for sure. But if you're enough of an audiophile to drop $1250 on speakers, do you really want them disguised as ice cream?

3) These faux sundaes don't even look good. If you want to make a great fake sundae, put a couple of "scoops" of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry together with some colorful sprinkles and a fudge drizzle. Don't build a random mound of lumpy, melty vanilla and put veins of chocolate on it. Ew.

Treasure: Stainless Steel CD Rack

|

Stainless Steel CD Rack.jpg

I know that everyone is crazy about MP3 players, and I did jump on that train years ago, but I'm still a bit old school and continue to buy CDs. I don't have my CDs displayed or anything, but I think this stainless steel CD rack is pretty cool.

It holds 112 CDs and mounts to the wall. Since the CDs are displayed both vertically and horizontally, it makes it look more like wall art than just a big metal shelf full of CDs. Maybe that's why it costs $271!

Bored? Online? Got 5 Minutes?

|

drum keys keyboard.JPG

If you are bored while you are online, there are countless ways to spend your unimportant time. You could play games for free, read blogs, go shopping, or update your Twitter/Facebook/MySpace page every minute. Been there, done that. Here's something pretty cool (and free!) that should keep you entertained for at least a few minutes.

Each letter key on your keyboard makes a different "drum" sound. Some of the letters (such as Q) make a normal sound that you'd hear from a typical drum set. However, some of the letters (B, for example) make a totally unexpected sound. The N key sounds like it could've been in "Hangin' Tough" by New Kids on the Block.

There's not really a lot for me to say about it other than it's entertaining, colorful, and clever. I guarantee if you turn the sound up on your computer and hit some of the letter keys (try the V key) it'll grab your co-worker's attention.

Got more time to kill? Check out some of the other cool things on this same site, such as a video for TV on the Radio's "Wolf Like Me".

No Way! They're from Norway!?

|

I never really knew of anything cool and famous that was related to Norway, other than Norwegian Cruise Lines and the Norway village at Disney's Epcot theme park. It ends up that there are some pretty well-known bands and musicians from Norway. When I think of Norway's music scene, I think of lots of electronic and metal music. Thankfully, there's more genres to it.

Röyksopp

This Norwegian electronica duo is probably best known in the U.S. for their song "Remind Me", which was featured on a Geico caveman commercial.

A-Ha

This band from Norway has been around since 1982 and they're still making music. Although I doubt anyone can name one of their songs other than "Take on Me".

"Thursday" Songs

|

For today's post, I've compiled a collection of songs with "Thursday" in the title. They aren't all great, but hey, I didn't have much to choose from! Enjoy your Thursday!

"Thursday's Child" - David Bowie

I thought this video was boring and a little odd. But it is David Bowie, so how could I expect anything totally normal?

"Thursday Afternoon" - Brian Eno

This video clip is just a small portion of the song, which is actually 61 minutes long and is the only track on his 1985 album. If you like this song and video, you'll also probably like Ambient Calm.

"Sweet Thursday" - Matt Costa

"Tuesday & Thursday" - Hot Boys

This is not an actual video. It is the song playing while you look at the album cover with some text scrolling. Woohoo.

"Thursday Afternoon" - Henry Rollins

No video or audio for this one. You can search for it on iTunes, or just read the lyrics. The Indigo Girls also have a song called "Thursday Afternoon".

"Thursday" - The Fatima Mansions

The Fatima Mansions
are a band in the UK. You can go to their MySpace page to get a feel for what they sound like. If you want to read the lyrics, go here.

"Perfect by Thursday" - Kendall Payne

You can hear a clip of this song on Amazon.

"Thursday" - Life of Agony

I haven't heard this song yet, but if it sounds like the songs on their MySpace page, I'm probably not going to like it. I'm not really a metal fan though. Lyrics are here.

"Thursday" - The Futureheads

OK, so that video is for "Skip to the End"...I couldn't find a video for "Thursday" and I happen to like "Skip to the End"! You can hear a preview of "Thursday" on Amazon.

Thursday (the band name)

They don't have a song with "Thursday" in the title (at least not that I saw), but the band name is Thursday, so I figured they are worthy of being included on the list.

Any Given Thursday (John Mayer album)

john mayer any given thursday.jpg

This album brought hits such as "Why Georgia" and "Your Body is a Wonderland". If you own a radio, then you've heard these songs plenty of times.

If you know of any more songs with "Thursday" in the title, leave a comment.

Fun with Food - Food Stop Motion Videos

|

Stop motion videos aren't anything new, but they are still neat to watch. The detail, editing time, and creativity are impressive. Well, not for all, but for some! After searching around You Tube, I've rounded up some pretty cool and not agonizingly long stop motion videos involving food.

Western Spaghetti

OK, so this one doesn't involve a lot of real food, but ordinary objects that look like food are used. I've seen several videos created by PES, and they are all extremely creative. For example, in the above stop motion video, wooden Pixie Stick "noodles" turn into soft rubber bands after boiling. Rubik's cubes, googly eyes, and money trees...what's not to love? If you like Vat19's Ambient Fire DVD, be sure to check out the Yule Log video made by PES.

Cupcake Dance

In this video, a bunch of cupcakes dance around a table. It starts off with one couple and eventually 7 cupcake couples are introduced. Nice cupcake choreography!

Tic Tac Fireworks

Tic Tacs are used to create a stop motion firework display. Mint leaves, orange peels, and orange slices are also used, which is a neat way to show the Tic Tac flavors.

The 50 Best Movie Dance Scenes Of All Time

|

As much as people like to make fun of Bollywood movies for all the random singing and dancing, it's not like American movies are completely free of dance scenes. Below, I've compiled the top 50 movie dance scenes, based on my own entirely subjective evaluation (which should be obvious when you see the Labyrinth in the top 5).

Enjoy the videos, and feel free to add your favorites in the comments. I'm sure I missed plenty of good ones!

1. Singin' in the Rain: The fact that this scene is so highly recognizable, even decades later, should be all the evidence needed to give it number one.

2. Stormy Weather: Fred Astaire called it "the greatest dance number ever filmed". We think he was just being modest.

3.The Labyrinth: This may not have the most conventional appeal, but anyone who can pull off that hair, and that outfit, with those gnarled little puppets deserves a mention.

Neil Diamond is, in fact, awesome.

|
Neil%20Diamond%20silver%20stallion.jpg

I've been a fan of Neil Diamond for a long time. When I was a kid, I'd drive around with my Dad singing along to Neil Diamond songs, so I became a fan at a young age and have stayed a fan. So thanks Dad, for making me a fan of Neil, Bread, and The Beatles!

It's probably not very common for a twenty-something in 2008 to be a genuine fan of Neil Diamond. Most people my age probably only know what Neil Diamond looks like because of the movie Saving Silverman or from Will Ferrell's imitations on Saturday Night Live.

If you've spent even a small amount of time in a karaoke bar, you have probably heard someone totally slaughter one of his most popular songs, "Sweet Caroline". If you attend Red Sox home games or watched Fever Pitch, then you've heard the song in it's original glory.

You might not like his sequin shirt style, but that just reinforces how awesome he is. He can wear a shirt with 50,000 sequins on it and still get respect.

Regardless of the outrageous shirts, you have to admit that he has a great voice. He has a way of making a common word sound amazing, such as when he sings "good" for the second time in the verse "Good times never seemed so good" from the song "Sweet Caroline". Some of my other more upbeat favorites are "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show".

It's really easy to find Neil Diamond music, but it's not as easy to find other Neil Diamond merchandise. I'm disappointed in the selection. You can get practically any product imaginable with the face of some crappy boy band member's face on it, but where's all the Neil stuff?

Besides the usual stuff like posters, t-shirts, and buttons, here's some Neil Diamond merchandise that I found.

Top 10 Secretly Illicit Songs

|

While the movie itself was kind of lame, I can't help but giggle every time I think about the "Puff the Magic Dragon" scene in Meet the Parents. If you haven't seen it, the basic idea is that Robert De Niro's character enjoys the song but doesn't acknowledge the possibility that it might be about something other than a dragon that lived by the sea. Ben Stiller's character mentions the "other meaning" and is promptly interrogated by De Niro, the father-in-law to be.

Taking inspiration from that scene, we've compiled a list of other songs that may or may not mean exactly what they say.

10. Olivia Newton-John, Let's Get Physical - Maybe she's singing about exercising. Or maybe not.

9. Bloodhound Gang; Foxtrot, Uniform, Charlie, Kilo - With lines like "Put the you know what in the you know where" and "Vulcanize the whoopee stick in the ham wallet", there's really no way to argue that this one is anything but dirty.

8. Cyndi Lauper, She Bop - Another 80s classic, this song could be about dancing, but most people agree that it's about a different "hobby".
