Overview:

The Pacific Triton, named after the Greek God of the Sea, is a beautifully colored and interestingly shaped seashell. Adult tritons are active predators which feed on starfish and other mollusks. The Giant Triton can reach lengths of nearly 20 inches. Our Pacific Tritons aren't quite that large, but their beautiful coloration makes up for their "standard" size.

Pacific Triton Facts

  • Uncharacteristically for gastropods, tritons are not hermaphrodites. They have two distinct sexes.
  • Adult tritons are carnivores and actively hunt mollusks and starfish.
  • Giant tritons can kill and digest crown-of-thorns starfish (a large species up to 3 feet in diameter and covered in poisonous spikes an inch long).
  • Tritons grip its prey with its muscular foot and uses its toothy radula (a serrated, cutting organ) to saw through its prey's skin.

About our Seashells

We scoured the world looking for the highest quality seashells to bring to our customers. This required more than buying a really large net, throwing it in the ocean, and seeing what we came up with. Because the last time we did this on vacation and decided to try to keep that conch shell, we got a lot more than we bargained for (think rotting garbage type smell).

Cleaning and Polishing

Because seashells come from The Ocean (that's not a nightclub in Miami) and they used to be the home for some sort of organism, they have to be cleaned and polished before they can be brought home. It's a labor intensive process that must be done by experts. Cleaning and polishing by amateurs results in horrible looking shells with jagged edges and lots of dirty spots. We found experts who have been doing this for decades. And that's why these shells look so darned good!

Careful Packing and Shipping

It's imperative that seashells are packaged properly to avoid damage in shipping. We take great care and pride in ensuring that your delivery arrives completely unharmed. Your shells are wrapped in multiple layers of bubble wrap and then surrounded by a generous amount of soft padding. Your wrapped shell will always arrive in a box significantly larger than the shell itself to allow for the maximum in padding and protection.

I have a burning question about this product!

Is there something you need to know about this product that we've omitted?

A few customer questions we've answered

Q: Hi do you have a 16" pacific triton ? thank you
A: Our Pacific Triton shells are approximately 6 to 8 inches in length.

Q: how much would a 20" triton be worth?
A: Unfortunately, we never passed our Shell Appraisal Exam, so we have no idea. You might be able to figure this out with a little web research, though.

Q: Whats the difference from these shells, and the ones outside my mermaid cave?
A: These shells are clean and dry.

Q: Did Vat19 really scour the world looking for the highest quality shells or do you buy them wholesale?
A: Do you mean to tell us that you don't believe that we regularly take trips around the world to collect shells alongside native islanders and angry crabs?

Q: If I were to purchase one of these shells would you say that it would increase my chances of getting laid?
A: Of course it would. The way we see it, you have two options - (1) Wear it around your neck on a gold chain. We hear the girls at the local bus stop love that. (2) Take the sensitive, poetic approach as the two of you listen to the "sounds of the ocean" by pressing your ear to the shell's opening.

Q: These shells are large and make me feel incompetent, as if I were less of a man, do you have any smaller shells that I may purchase?
A: No. We suggest that you just buy one of these fantastic shells and then work through your issues. It's a growth experience.

Q: On average, how big is the opening on one of these shells, lengthwise?
A: About 2-3".

Q: what animals eat tritons
A: Humans are the main predators of giant tritons.

Q: Are these shells good for... You know, THAT?
A: No, we don't know. What?

Q: what do tritons eat?
A: Tritons eat starfish and other mollusks. No need to worry about feedings; Vat19 only sells empty triton shells.
