The SleepMate 980A white noise machine masks the annoying and distracting noises that make it difficult to sleep.

While turning on a fan or keeping the air conditioner running can produce a constant "hum", these devices typically produce sound in a repeatable pattern, which in itself is distracting. Plus, a ceiling fan or air conditioner does not mask out unwanted noises from neighbors or the street. A white noise machine is a much more effective alternative.

There is a big difference between a household machine that generates a low "hum" and a white noise generator. Basically, a white noise machine produces random sound in nearly every frequency that we humans can hear.

By "covering" all of these frequencies with random noise, the white noise machine effectively blankets or blocks distracting noises. A refrigerator that hums, on the other hand, is only generating noise in a small frequency band. Thus, it's not going to mask out talking neighbors, barking dogs, or the random creaking of a house. Plus, a "humming" device in your house may stop humming or change its tone or frequency right as you're about to fall asleep.

Easy to operate

The SleepMate 980A White Noise Machine is incredibly easy to use. Simply plug in the generous 8 foot cord and flip the switch to one of two speeds (high and low). You can further adjust the sound of the white noise machine by twisting the collar or the cap of the device. Twisting the collar adjusts the volume and turning the cap slightly adjusts the tone of the noise.

A: Unfortunately, we don't carry a UK-compatible white noise machine.

Q: Can this be opened easily for cleaning? Does the motor use ball bearings? How heavy is it?
A: Any attempt to access the interior of the SleepMate for cleaning yourself is discouraged by the manufacturer; however, it is necessary to open the unit in order to completely remove any accumulation of dust. Using a vacuum cleaner with a crevice attachment, you could try vacuuming the dust through the slots in the housing. This will help to a limited degree, but will not remove all the dust. The manufacturer recommends sending your SleepMate to them for any type of service work. The motor does not use ball bearings. The SleepMate White Noise Machine weighs 1.5 pounds.

A: The SleepMate has been used with babies for 46 years with no ill effects.

Q: Will it drown out sounds from ABOVE? If not, Can I mount this thing upside-down on the ceiling to drown out a stomping neighbor who klunks and creaks through the night?
A: The SleepMate White Noise Machine can help drown out noise coming from any direction. You want to place the unit between yourself and the noise source. Since the SleepMate is motor driven, you should not hang it upside down or on its side. It would put unnecessary stress on the motor and could cause it not to work properly. We recommend placing the SleepMate on top of the tallest piece of furniture in the room to help block out noise from above.

A: I suppose that depends on whether the ghost is a friendly ghost or mean ghost. Vat19 doesn't have any ghosts (at least not that we know of) so we were not able to test the effects of a white noise machine on ghost behavior.
