Overview

Falling has never looked as cool as when showcased by Euler's Disc.

Named after the famous mathematician Leonard Euler (pronounced Oiler), this desk toy is a stunning demonstration of several physics concepts.

With a twist of your fingers, the heavy chrome-plated disc can fall for up to two minutes! This motion is known as sprolling (a combination of spinning and rolling), and it causes the disc to make circular passes around the center of the base while remaining upright like a spinning top.

As the disc loses energy, the angle between it and the base diminishes and an interesting whirring sound develops.

Place a combination of the included magnetized holographic foils on the top of the disc to create interesting visual effects. For a light show that is nearly beyond belief, turn out the lights and add a laser pointer!

Don't be shy; smart stuff is fun!

Falling has never looked so cool!

Euler's Disc is an amazingly simple, yet mathematically complex desk toy. It consists of a concave, mirrored base and a heavy, chrome-plated disc.

When spun on its curved edge, the disc exhibits a paradoxical effect. As the disk loses energy, its spin rate increases rapidly. Because of the low-friction materials used, Euler's Disc will sproll (spin and roll) for up to two minutes! As it eventually comes to rest, it makes a fun whirring sound that rapidly increases in frequency.

Euler's Disc is a visual feast

Euler's Disc is fun to watch for several reasons. Initially, it's simply fascinating that an object can spin for so long. But as the spinning continues (almost never-ending), the holographic display becomes mesmerizing. And if you want to be awestruck, add a flashlight or laser pointer.

Magnetized holographic foil adds visual interest to Euler's Disc.
Experiment with the included holographic foils to create a plethora of visual effects.

Engineered for record-setting sprolling

One edge of the chrome plated disc is carefully machined to a super smooth radius. This substantially reduces surface friction and significantly contributes to sprolls of up to two minutes!

Holographic foil enhances the show

Euler's Disc includes nine pieces of holographic foil. Experiment with various combinations to create stunning visual displays.

Turn out the lights for an amazing spectacle!

Euler's Disc can create astonishing light shows with the simple addition of a laser pointer. Switch off the lights, aim the pointer at the middle of the base, and spin the disc. Trust us, it's awesome. And if you don't trust us, check out the video below.

Burning Questions: You Ask and We Answer

Burning Questions: You ask and we answer!
Your questions that have been answered by the Vat19.com staff:
What is this sorcery?!
The dark science of physics!
I'm from Brazil want to know if you guys can send me this product
Yes, we ship internationally.
How does the mirror in the base affect the spin?
The fact that the mirror is concave prevents the spinning disc from traveling off the surface of the mirror. Being reflective adds to the visual fun of the product.
Just like a coin on a table, could the disc fall off the base while spinning?
No. The concave design of the base keeps the disc from falling off the edges.
Would it be possible to use a flashlight instead of lasers, and still get some kind of effect?
Not really. It would look more like a mirrored disco ball than a laser light show.
Is it heavy?
Nope! Euler's Disc is not heavy at all.
can it spin for longer than 2 minutes?
It's definitely possible. In our experiments, two minutes was the average amount of time.
Does the base or disc get scratched up over time?
Not that we've noticed but it's entirely possible for scuffs to form on the base. It is supporting a heavy, spinning, metal disk after all.
Does the disc come with the mirror pictured?
Everything you see in the pictures come with the set!
If I were to travel back to the Victorian era and show this to some people, what is the possibility that they would mistake it for witchcraft and burn me at the stake?
No. People have played with spinning toys for centuries.
Can you take it on a plane?
Maybe? I don't see why you wouldn't be able to.
DOES THE DIAMETER OF THE MIRROR OR THE DEGREE OF ITS CONCAVITY MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE BEHAVIOR OF THE DISC?
Indeed it idoes. The concave nature of the platform is a large part of what allows the disc to spin for such a long time.
What was the longest spin?
Almost two full minutes!
How heavy is the disk it's self? And is it difficult for first time users?
The disc is only a few ounces. If you can spin a coin, you're definitely qualified to use Euler's Disc.
Will there be a set were it holds other reflectors? Will there be a set witch is only the disk?
No and no. The disc alone wouldn't be much good without the base, so there's no point in selling it that way.
Does it come with a mirror aw well?
You mean the base? Of course!
So all you have to do is spin it? Also will the disc ever break if dropped?
That's correct. No, the disc itself will not break.
Is this a good thing for children with austism?
We aren't qualified to make that sort of assessment, but it's certainly possible!
Is there anyway to prolong the spinning like with grease or something to reduce friction?
Less friction could increase the spin time, but by how much is negligible.
Can the disc sproll for a long time on any surface?
The concave shape of the platform is what allows the disc to spin for so long.
How much does the disc itself weighs?
The whole device weighs approximately 33.4 ounces.
Does the foil affect the disc's performance?
Not in the slightest!
What is the disk made up of?
Chrome plated steel.
I understand that Vat19 has no brick-and-mortar store, but if, say, I were to happen upon the warehouse, could I buy something on-site?
Yes you can! Walk-ins are totally welcome.
This is more a sugection than a question but, it would be cooler if one simple lazer was included or separated for us to have less work to make a disco (im lazy)
Maybe someday. Laser pointers are exceptionally easy to find if you don't have one already.
Will my forever spin top work on the base?
Sure. Tops will spin on any flat surface.
Will it "sproll" if you drop it onto the base?
Not reliably, especially if it lands flat on the surface. Spinning is not only the best way to do it, but it is also less likely to damage the base.
How does this works???
We go into it in the description at the top of the page:

"This motion is known as sprolling (a combination of spinning and rolling), and it causes the disc to make circular passes around the center of the base while remaining upright like a spinning top.
As the disc loses energy, the angle between it and the base diminishes and an interesting whirring sound develops."
What is the longest time you've recorded of the curiously awesome Euler's disc?
For just about two minutes.
If you were you put a weak magnet below the base to affect spinning and duration would it work?
I think I know where you're going with this. I've seen products which do something similar, however they used electromagnets to provide an oscillating magnetic field. I don't think a regular magnet would work.
When you spun the disc at the start of the video, it spun for 1 minute 17.72 seconds and not a full two minutes. Why's that?
Because that's how long the video ended up being. We actually cut out some of the spinning for that reason.
I assume it doesn't come with a laser. I get cross promo'ed with a laser?
We do not sell lasers but luckily they are pretty easy to come by. Just check any office supply or party store.
Does it come with the base?
Of course! The base is an integral part of the device. We also mention that the base is included at the top of the page in the "Features and Specs" section.
Is it loud? I'm on phones at work and am wondering if my clients would hear it?
Euler's Disc definitely isn't silent, especially towards the end of its spin. It's possible that they might hear something over the phone.
What if I spun 2 of them on top of each other?
I'm not sure if such a thing is possible, honestly.
How well would this work with a hockey puck instead of the disc?
Not very well at all, actually.
Can you please upload the audio file for the music used in the laser light shower?
Sorry, no can do.
Would putting this in a vacuum chamber theoretically make it spin longer? (Don't actually test it, unless you have a vacuum chamber)
Perhaps slightly longer since there would be no air resistance, however gravity and friction would still cause it to fall eventually.
Who was that kid that said vat19.com?
A really awesome fan who paid us a visit a few weeks ago! Talk about being at the right place at the right time!
Will the magnetized holographic foil break when i drop it.
Nope!
What audio tracks are used in Euler's Disc Laser Light Show video demonstration?
Whatever music we use is either produced in house or from a collection of generic, royalty free music. There's no specific artist or title which we can provide.
Can the disk be engraved?
Theoretically, however we do not offer such a service.

Please excuse the shameless cross promotions!
