Burning Questions: You Ask and We Answer

Burning Questions: You ask and we answer!
Your questions that have been answered by the Vat19.com staff:
Could you grow other "plants" in it?
Yes, you could use your own seeds once the ones in the kit are all used up. However, you may need to get your hands on some more plant nutrient and vermiculite. (Yes, I know what your quotes mean.)
Can an item like this be shipped internationally (i.e: to New Zealand) or would it all depend on the country's shipping regulations?
Unfortunately, because it contains seeds, this item cannot be shipped internationally.
Do you know of any plans from the manufacturer to make more types in the future?
There may be more herb types in the future.
that is the sexiest thing i have ever seen in my life
Well OK then!
can these grow in the winter? i live in Massachusetts.
Yes, indoors of course. Additional light (from a grow light) will probably be needed, as well as sufficient warmth provided.
What's the purpose of the felt strip?
You place the felt strip into the water/nutrient reservoir and then snake it up to the pot. It helps distribute water to your seedlings.
since its winter, what would be a inexpensive way to give warmth to the plant ?
A sunny windowsill (on a southern or western-facing window) should be fine. If you are in an area that doesn't get a lot of light during the winter, an artificial light source like a grow light is probably your best bet. The price range for these can vary greatly.
with the seeds included, how many mint plants can u grow 2.will it be ok to leave the plant in the dark at night or does it need heat and light 24/7
1) The Mint Grow Bottle Kit includes 20mg of seeds, which is enough to grow several plants. 2) No, it is not necessary for the plant to receive light 24/7.
Can I drink from the bottle?
The bottle's been cut in half, so not really.
What is plant nutrient?
The plant nutrient is the starter fertilizer that is furnished with the kit. You'll add this fertilizer to the water when setting up the kit. Once that fertilizer runs out, you'll need to purchase additional fertilizer for subsequent uses. Any water soluble fertilizer will work.
why can't this be shipped outside the USA? couldn't you still sell the whole thing without the seeds and canadians could buy their own seeds?
The Grow Bottle Kits contain seeds which cannot be shipped internationally. The seeds are prepackaged in the kits.
What's the purpose of the cork coaster?
It serves as the lid on the packaging, but also protects the bottom of the bottle (and your table or windowsill) from scuffs or scratches.
Why it cannot be shipped outside the United States?
Because it's against the law to ship live seeds/animals from one country to another without a mountain of expensive permits.
how long will the herbs last without having to replant? does the plant continue growing once you have cut some to use or once its been used is it gone?
If you only harvest 1/3 to 1/2 of the grown herbs, then several harvests are possible off of one planting. Of course, you'll have to give the herbs time to grow back between harvests. Replanting is necessary when herb growth slows too much or quality suffers (that is, the herbs just start looking bedraggled).
Can I just buy the bottle? What if I want to use other seeds?
No, the bottle is not sold separately. And yes, you can use your own seeds along with the kit.
How long will it take to grow?
You should see a sprout in 1-2 weeks. You should be able to begin harvesting after 8 weeks of growing.
Why does saltwater kill plants?
I'm not a gardening expert, but from what I understand, salt water kills plants because it draws the nutrients out and away from the plant's roots. It's a whole reverse osmosis thing.
when r u guys going to make a video
It's in the video "queue". I don't have an exact date for its release.
AWESOMENESS!!
Glad you think so!
1.do u have to be like a super expert gardener to plant these? 2.do these come with everything u need to plant them or do u need to buy extra stuff? 3.how much mint will grow in one kit
1) Nope! We grew one ourselves, and trust us, we are not gardening experts. 2) Yes, the kit includes everything you need, except water and sunshine. But those are readily available. 3) Each kit includes enough seeds to grow several plants. The Mint Grow Bottle comes with 20mg of seeds.
im not sure if this is a dumb question but what are other uses for mint leaves other than making tea? thnx :)
It's not a dumb question at all. Mint leaves can also be used in beverages, jellies, candies, and ice creams. They're good for garnishing as well. Mint's essential oils are also used in aromatherapy.
I don't get where the felt strip goes and why it's there in the first place. Also, what does the vermiculite do?
The felt strip goes inside the neck of the wine bottle and brings water from the bottom up to your plant. Vermiculite is a natural mineral that has a "wicking" property, allowing it to draw water and nutrients.
Wait, so all there is to it is to add water and sun? is it care-free?
Pretty much! Just assemble the garden as instructed and then maintain water and sunlight.
Can you ship these to Australia?
Unfortunately we cannot ship anything with seeds internationally. Sorry!
Just received my plants! The instructions call to cover the top of the bottle with a plastic bag.. is saran wrap or a Ziploc (or other) more efficient for this? Thanks!
We would definitely recommend using a plastic bag (such as a sandwich bag or Ziploc) rather than Saran wrap.
Are the seeds dated for year use?
The seeds are in fact dated when they come off the assembly line. They have a shelf life of 2 years.
Where can I buy a refill of the plant nutrient for this product, and what are the major nutrient for these herbs?
Any water-soluble fertilizer that you purchase at a gardening store will work with your GrowBottle herbs. The minerals necessary for healthy herbs (and all plants, for that matter) are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). You will find these three nutrients listed on the fertilizer label as N-P-K, along with their ratio. For example, 10-10-10 means the fertilizer contains equal amounts of each nutrient. A combination of 30-10-20 means the fertilizer contains 30 parts N (nitrogen), 10 parts P (phosphorus), and 20 parts K (potassium). Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for growing herbs, as it promotes green growth, but the other two are also necessary (just in lesser amounts).
Can you use your own seeds after the ones that were included are used?
Yes.
Would it take longer to grow the parsley in the grow bottle kit or how you normally grow plants outdoors?
Not if they receive an appropriate amount of water and sunlight.
your product is purely made from awesomeness! can i grow any of these in the philippines?
Sorry, but we are not able to ship any products containing seeds internationally.
How long does it take to sprout?
You should see a sprout in 1-2 weeks. You should be able to begin harvesting after 8 weeks of growing.
Can I buy this demented stuff, but there's a trick, you keep the seeds. So I will pay for the all kit, less the seeds (you can throw them in a snowman, they're not matter to me !). And then you ca ship the kit to me, in Canada. Wow I'm a genius boy !
I wish we could, but we'd have to disassemble the whole kit to take the seeds out. Sorry!
Where are you located....in Idaho possibly? I see it's certified organic by Idaho State Dept. of Agriculture. Just wondering since I'm in Boise.
Nope, we're in St. Louis, Missouri. The manufacturer is located in Idaho.
Approximately how many seeds are there?
The seed amount is based on weight, not number of seeds, with smaller seeds weighing much less. The kits contain enough seed to grow several plants in each bottle (basil = 50 mg; mint = 20 mg; parsley = 120 mg).
Can you still use it when your plant died?
The bottle itself? Sure. You'll just need a new plant.
What is the difference between garden in a bag and Grow Bottle Upcycled Hydrogarden Kit?
One is in a recyclable bag and the other is in a decorative repurposed wine bottle.
What is the purpose of the cork coaster?
It serves as the lid on the packaging, but also protects the bottom of the bottle (and your table or windowsill) from scuffs or scratches.
Can you use the bottle again to grow other plants with?
You would probably have to clean out the bottle and put in fresh dirt and plant food, but you should be able to reuse the bottle for another plant if you need to.
Why can't you ship internationally sometimes???
Sometimes it is an agreement with the manufacturer. In the case of this product, and any other that have seeds, it's actually a matter of legality. We cannot ship seeds to different countries because it could cause permanent damage to your local ecosystem.
how do you replace the seeds once the ones they came with are used?
You can use seeds that you purchase from the local garden shop.
Do you carry any other plant varieties?
The only plants we carry are those listed at the top of the page.
It looks like there are rocks in the bottom of the bottle but I don't see that on the list of what it includes.
I think what you're seeing is the contents of the kit in their individual packaging.
How much light is needed for these to grow? If they are set-up close to an apartment window (that doesn't get a ton of light) and by artificial lighting, is that all that I will need?
A sunny windowsill (on a southern or western-facing window) should be fine. If you are in an area that doesn't get a lot of light during the winter, an artificial light source like a grow light is probably your best bet.
How long will the wool wick last and how do you keep it from getting moldy?
The wool wick should last for quite some time (a year or longer). The manufacturer has not seen mold grow on the wool wick.
Its been twelve days and I see no visual sprouts for my mint plant. Did I do something wrong or should I keep waiting?
Keep waiting. Out of the three herbs (basil, mint, parsley), mint takes the longest to sprout and grow. The average time to grow a full mint plant is about 8 weeks.
This is great, since I live in a tiny apartment and can't have a garden. In your experience (since you test each curiously awesome product yourself) how long does the plant take to grow fully? Oh, and thanks for being amazing!
When kept in a warm area with good light, it takes about 6 weeks from planting for the parsley and basil to get nice and filled-out. The mint will take a week or two longer.
awesome i can make the perfect mint ice cream with homemade ice cream with freshly grown mint
That sounds delicious!
r those wine bottles
Yep, sure are! Cool, huh?
This is GENIUS!!!
Glad you think so!
Where can you purchase just the reservoir?
I'm sorry but the reservoir is not sold separately.
What keeps the seeds from falling down the neck of the bottle, if the wick is so thin?
The included clay pebbles and vermiculite will keep the seeds from falling down into the bottle.
Excuse me but for his price i would love to know how much of each which will produce, how quick can it be used up and how long they can be stored in my cabinet?
It's impossible to determine the exact yield that a plant will produce. As for storage, once dried most herbs will last for a very long time if stored properly.
Do you ever have to change the pot?
Most herbs tend to stay small, so there isn't really any need to transfer them into another pot as long as they're well trimmed.
Does the plastic bag need to be airtight or lose when put over the top?
The bag should be a little loose and not completely airtight.
Does the mint bottle contain peppermint? Or some other kind?
It is a very common Mentha of the Lamiaceae family.
Are replacement seeds and parts available?
Sorry, but replacement seeds and parts are not sold separately.
How do you keep algae from growing in the water reservoir?
Although neither Vat19 nor the manufacturer have heard of algae growing, you can use distilled water to prevent it. Or you can frequently clean the bottle and replace the water/fertilizer solution with fresh solution.
