Overview

Litographs are engaging posters consisting solely of the text from a famous literary work.

From a distance, each colorful and sleek design appears to celebrate a prominent novel. Upon closer inspection, however, the Litograph reveals itself to be comprised exclusively of the book's written words.

Each 18" x 24" poster is printed on professional quality bond paper and features a three-quarter inch border on all sides for easy mounting or framing.

Litographs are currently available in four styles: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Great Gatsby, Moby Dick, and On the Origin of Species.

It looks like a poster, but it's actually a book.

Well, truthfully, it's a poster and it's a book. From a few feet away, Litographs may appear to simply be cool designs related to monumental feats of literature.

Upon closer inspection, however, you'll see that they consist solely of the printed word! It's the arrangement and coloring of those words that transform them into pieces of art you can hang on your wall.

Litographs are colorful and clever posters made from books.

The details are in the fine print

From a few inches away, the true nature of the Litograph is revealed. The entire print is made from the text of the book. Not only are Litographs a clever idea, but the designs look great, too — which is important because you can certainly find more comfortable ways to read Moby Dick. However, Litographs are quite the conversation piece!

The words from the book are used to create an artistic representation of the story.
The text of the book provides the building blocks for Litograph Posters.

This picture is worth millions of words!

The old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" seems to apply here... somehow.

We're not math majors, but if a picture is worth a thousand words and the picture in question is made from thousands of words, wouldn't said picture be worth millions of words? Who knows, but we think you know what we're trying to say.

From a few feet away, your Litographs looks like an interesting poster. Upon closer inspection, you'll see that words make up the entirety of the image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Is the entire book contained within the poster?

Answer: That depends upon the book. See the chart above for how much of each work is contained within the poster. Essentially, some books are far too long to fit within the allotted space and remain legible.

Question: What is the International Book Bank?

Answer: The designers and printers of Litographs have partnered with the International Book Bank in order to promote literacy by donating books and other educational materials to developing countries. Your purchase of a Litograph Poster ensures the donation of one book to this worthwhile charity.

Question: Can you really read it?

Answer: The text is indeed small, but it is legible!

Question: When will you have other books?

Answer: Every work that we have available is listed above. The more popular this product proves to be, the more styles we may add in the future. Thus, the moral of this answer is that if you don't see your favorite book, you should buy lots of the available posters to fool us into carrying more styles. Simple, right? Now, buy, buy, buy!

Burning Questions: You Ask and We Answer

Burning Questions: You ask and we answer!
Your questions that have been answered by the Vat19.com staff:
Can you make a 50 shades of grey one?
We'd rather stick to books that aren't horrifying.
I wish that this poster came in a frame!
But what if you didn't like the frame we chose? This way you can go to a frame store and pick out one you like.
How do we know where to start on the "poster" book
Same as any other book -- top left corner and read left to right.
I know you probably would have to get a few rights to do this but it would look so awesome if you could do this with the famous quotes of what they say. like a marilyn monroe with james dean Picture
That would be awesome! Maybe someday the manufacturer will make one and we'll be able to carry it.
Any chance of making MacBeth or other Shakespear? I'm quite sure that it is in the public domain.
Maybe someday! Please keep checking back!
Can you do it with Harry Potter?
Maybe someday! Right now there are no plans for more titles, but if we do add more you will find them at the top of the page.
Can you guys read it?
Yes, the writing is legible (just really tiny).
Any plans for more public domain books?
Maybe someday! Please keep checking back to see what we come up with.
Can you do the Hobbit? I know you're not the manufacturer but I just wanna know!
I doubt it, honestly. All of these books are considered to be public domain, so there was no need to purchase licensing rights to manufacture these. "The Hobbit" is still owned by the Tolkien estate.
So, it's just a canvas print? No frame around it, like in the video? thanks!
That is correct. You will need to provide your own frame.
What is the size of the text in the posters?
Tiny! I dont have a font size I can give you, but trust me when I say that it is small!
No lord of the rings or harry potter?
Neither of those books are in the public domain, so they would be considerably more costly to license and print.
What happens if I actually try to read it?
You might learn something!
Why no Shakespeare?
As amazing as The Bard was, we felt like we should pay tribute to some of the world's other fantastic authors.
Please, Can You add The Harry Potter series?
Probably not. All of these stories are in the public domain, whereas the Harry Potter books are still being regularly published and royalties still collected by the author.

In other words, it'd be too expensive to do that.
Does the poster contain the whole book?
Only "Alice in Wonderland" contains the entire book.
I want to see the hunger games!
As popular as the Hunger Games series is, I don't think they're quite as culturally important as these classics. Who knows though? Maybe someday we'll see one in the shape of a Mocking Jay.
Which of these books would be age appropriate for a 6th grader?
Alice in Wonderland would probably be the most appropriate for that particular age.
If I get the Moby Dick one can I read the poster and then be able to do my school project on it?
Only if your school project is to read and do a report on the 1/6th of the book.
Is a frame included with my purchase of this product from Vat19?
You will need to purchase your own frame. Litographs arrive rolled up like posters.
Can you make a Harry potter one?
If Harry Potter ever slips into public domain it might. The world would have to run out of money to give to JK Rowling first though.
how is the difficulty of reading these looks?? like moby dick words are a bit tough to follow is it like with the others?
It's not as easy as reading it from the actual book, but it's not super difficult either. Keeping track of where you are would be the only real challenge.
would reading the poster be hard because of the way the words get cut off? and is it hard to tell were to go next for the next line of text?
It's not as easy as reading from a book but I wouldn't say that the text is particularly difficult to make out or follow.
Will I need a magnifying glass to see the text properly?
A magnifying glass isn't necessary but it will definitely make reading the text a lot easier.
Will you guys ship it rolled up into a tube thing?
Yes. That is how posters are normally sent through the mail.
can you make a lord of the rings one?please!!!!!!!
That would be awesome but Christopher Tolkien is notoriously cautious when it comes to giving out the rights to publish his father's works. The books we've chosen are all in the public domain and do not require licensing fees or legal agreements.
Are you planning to bring it out in other languages as well?
Not at this time. I think that the feat itself is impressive enough to transcend language barriers.
Can you read it if you look closely?
Yep! It might be a little hard on the eyes after a while, but the print is definitely legible.
Will there be wizard of oz and around the world in 80 days versions?
There are no plans for more versions at this time.
Why is there no "Harry Potter" ? my girlfriend is crazy for that series.
Because Harry Potter is an expensive license! All of the books used for Litographs are in the public domain.
I understand you guys aren't the manufactures, however do you know if they will ever do Dracula, or Frankenstein.
We do not. Sorry!
how did you get the writing and make the pictures out of a real story into pictures ?
By squeezing the words into patterns. It's very similar to pointillism, actually.
Is it possible to have a "The Catcher In The Rye" one? Meanwhile the Origin Of Species has my name on it!
Sorry, but there are no plans for a "Catcher in the Rye" poster.
Which book do you think is the best?
All three are drastically different and can't really be compared, so there is no "best". My personal favorite is probably "On The Origin of Species".
I was thinking about buying one of these for my local librarian, would she really love it since it's a book/part of a book?
I'm fairly certain that someone who has dedicated their life and education to the care and keeping of books would appreciate a Litograph.
Can you do the Hunger Game series or the Divergent Series?
Those titles are a little too new to be considered classics. Sorry!
So...how long did it take you to make this? =)
We're not the manufacturer, but I assume the artists who made it used some sort of clever program to complete the design.

Please excuse the shameless cross promotions!
