Overview

Chess is cool, but it does have its drawbacks. Namely, you have to find an opponent that is of a comparable skill level to yourself and not a complete dork. You may also not have a spare three hours lying around to devote to an epic Chess duel. Fixing these problems is where Solitaire Chess scores big!

Solitaire Chess is a single-player logic puzzle that uses the rules of Chess to exercise your noodle. To play, first choose one of the 30 included double-sided challenge cards and slide it into the top of the Solitaire Chess board. Arrange the chess pieces on the board as illustrated on the card, and then start moving. To win, you must capture a piece on every move until only one remains.

The Solitaire Chess puzzle board features a slide-out compartment underneath where you can store the 10 included game pieces, making it perfect for travel. The instruction manual includes three hints for each of the Solitaire Chess challenges, which range in difficulty from beginner to expert. Ages 8+.

Start by selecting one of the 60 challenges

Solitaire Chess includes thirty double-sided challenge cards. Color-coded by difficulty level, each card indicates the starting positions for the pieces used in that challenge.

Once you've selected a card, place it on top of the Solitaire Chess game board or slide it underneath for a more secure playing surface.

To begin playing Solitaire Chess, first choose one of the 60 included challenges.
Choose from sixty Chess puzzle challenges ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert.

Arrange the board according to the challenge card

The challenge card will illustrate the starting positions of the Chess pieces used in the puzzle. The harder the challenge, the more pieces that will be required.

Each move must result in a captured piece

After you've set up the Solitaire Chess board according to the challenge card, you must capture all of the pieces until only one remains. A piece must be captured on every move.

So, if a challenge begins with four pieces, you must make three Chess moves to eliminate three pieces. You can move the pieces in any order, but a piece must be captured on every move.

When only one piece remains, you've won!

Solitaire Chess is difficult. You must think in advance to ensure that every move results in a captured piece and that only one remains at the end. If you succeed, well, give yourself a pat on the back. And then pick a new challenge card!

The thirty challenge cards can be secured directly beneath the board surface. A plastic clip keeps them from falling out during transport.

how many puzzles r there

There are 30 double-sided challenge cards, so 60 puzzles altogether.

Would this be a good way to learn Chess for a person just starting out, even lacking familiarity with the rules?

A basic understanding of the rules is definitely required, but beyond that this is a great way to brush up on some basic (and some not-so-basic) tactics.

How many pieces does this come with? Does it come with as many in a traditional set?

No. It comes with 10 chess pieces (Pawn x 2, Bishop x 2, Knight x 2, Rook x 2, Queen, King).

can you play with 2 people?

No, this is a single-player game. Hence the name "Solitaire" Chess.

Is there a moving forward or backward for pawns?

Pawns can only move forward diagonally. They cannot move backwards.

is the chess pieces made out of plastic or glass?

The pieces are plastic.

Is it beginner friendly?

It is! The puzzles range from "Beginner" to "Expert" in difficulty.

You didn't mention whether the instruction book also stores in the case along with the men and cards. Does it? Also, how big is the case (LxWxH)?

Yes, it does. As for the dimensions, you can find them at the very top of the page in the "Features and Specs" section.

Can the pawn attack diagonally in any direction since there is no general direction it started from?

No, pawns can only move diagonally upward. They are not promoted when they reach the top row.

What is the Toray attack or whatever you call it?

The Torre Attack is an opening chess strategy. To be honest, I don't know a thing about chess (I need to practice with Solitaire Chess!), so I can't explain how it works. But if you search "Torre Attack" on the 'net, you'll find it.

hey I want to give it to someone who has been playing chess for 40 years and is really good. Be honest will he be challenged by it?

That depends. Does he play very well, or has he been playing for 40 years and still sort of sucks at it? Skill is a determining factor here, but I think most chess players will enjoy the challenge.

Would you recomend this for a 7 year old?

Only if your 7 year old has an interest in chess and can be trusted with the small pieces.

Did any of these puzzles make you rage in confusion?

Yes, most of the puzzles we sell have frustrated us greatly at one point or another. We actually smashed the 36 Cube because it was so mind-twisting.

Do we have to know how to play solitare and chess to play this?

You'll have to learn a little bit about chess moves. "Solitaire" just means you can play it by yourself.

Have you guys tried to solve this? If so, how long does it take? Oh, and do you think solitaire chess is more challenging than kanoodle genius? What about laser maze compared to them both?(ASking for a personal opinion).

Those are all very different kinds of puzzles that are solved in different ways, so it's not really fair to say that one is harder than the other. As for how long they take, that will depend on the skill level of the puzzle and how good you are at solving them! We don't think you'll burn through them very quickly.

Is it hard?

Not at first, but the expert level puzzles can be exceptionally difficult. Just like regular chess, it's easy to learn but difficult to master.

If you lose a piece, such as a pawn or bishop, is it possible to replace it?

Not from us, but you could use any chess piece available to you.

Does the book(instructions) tell you how do the pieces move?

Yes, though it would help to actually be familiar with how chess is played if you want to play the single player version.

In the video, i saw you move a pawn sideways, which you can't do in real chess to take other pieces. Are you allowed to do this in Solitaire Chess?

What you saw was actually the rook taking a piece from the former pawn's position. Solitaire Chess follows the same rules as regular chess.

Where is the solitaire in solitaire chess?

"Solitaire" is a term that is generally applied to any strategy game that can be played alone.

What are the dimensions of the chess pieces?

The pawn is 1.25" tall, the rook and knight are 1.5" tall, the bishop is 1.75" tall, the queen is just under 2" tall, and the king is 2.25" tall. The base of each piece is about 1" diameter.

so you have to move the way the real chess peice does?

Yes, you would use chess moves.

Are there any other colors for this?

No, Solitaire Chess is only available in the color you see on our website.

How do we determine which orientation to move the pieces in? Depending on the angle of the board in front of you, you'd be able to move pawns forward in two possible directions.

That would just be regular chess. Also, "solitaire" is by definition just for one person.

No, but that's not too terribly different from Chinese Checkers or that bizarre version of chess that Sheldon invented on the Big Bang Theory.

You could have someone help you, or you could play a standard game of chess with an opponent.

how does it work?

There are 30 double-sided challenge cards that show you where to place certain chess pieces. Then you need to make moves in order to end up with just one chess piece. But remember, a chess piece must be taken on every single move. So, if you start with four chess pieces, you have just three moves to end up with one and win that challenge.
