Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Will Cover Blubber ever get stretched out of shape?

Answer: In our tests, no way! As long as you don't over-stretch the material, it will always rebound to its original shape. Its reusability is why Cover Blubber is such an effective plastic wrap replacement.

Question: Can I use it in the microwave?

Answer: No. Cover Blubber is not microwave safe.

Question: Will it fit/work with my grandma's 18th century (and oddly-shaped) serving platter?

Answer: As long as the object is under 12" across, it should be fine. However, please keep in mind that Cover Blubber works best on items that are uniformly shaped (think circles and squares).

Question: How is Cover Blubber safer than traditional plastic wrap?

Answer: Prior to 2006, most plastic wraps were made from PVC which contains phthalates. Phthalates can disrupt hormones and they also leach into food wrapped in plastics made with them.

Thankfully, most (if not all) plastic wraps today are not made with PVC, but instead are made with LDPE. Annoyingly, LDPE plastic wraps don't adhere nearly as well as the old-style PVC plastic wrap. More concerning, however, is that LDPE may contain DEHA (another hormone disruptor linked to breast cancer in women and low sperm counts in men). Of particular concern is how these chemicals can leach into your food when used in a microwave.

Bottom line: Plastic wraps may or may not be safe — the jury is still out. And in all honesty, we still use it in many instances. However, using Cover Blubber is oftentimes easier (as it is far stickier than these newer plastic wraps) and it doesn't fill our landfills with tons of hard-to-degrade plastics.

So, give Cover Blubber a try. We're sure you'll love it!

Burning Questions: You Ask and We Answer

Burning Questions: You ask and we answer!
Your questions that have been answered by the Vat19.com staff:
Can it cover a strawberry?
The smallest size might be able to cover some of those gigantic mutant strawberries that look like two strawberries crushed into one. I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to eat the whole thing, though.
Are they sold separately?
No. Cover Blubber is sold in 4-piece sets.
After a while, will your food taste like rubber if you cover your food with the Cover Blubber?
Not at all. We tested Cover Blubber with pretty much every food item we could find and not one of them ended up tasting like rubber. Our philosophy is pretty simple: if the product isn't something we'd use in our own homes, we won't carry it.
What happens when you throw it in a fire?
It will melt and you will have wasted your money.
hi I am a big fan of vat 19 . I wanted to know who answers all of these questions asked ?
Rick (that's me!) answers all of the Burning Questions.
Do I wash the cover blubber with water or water and soap?
Warm water and gentle dish soap is all you'll need.
Are there any specific foods that I cannot use with cover blubber?
Not that we're aware of. Obviously you shouldn't attempt to use Cover Blubber on a container which is fresh from the oven or stovetop, as that might melt it, but as far as food is concerned there really aren't many limitations.
Is it like grossly sticky to the point where hair and everything will stick to it?
No, especially if you wash them after each use.
This may not count but why dont you give us a heads up before you make a vid?
Because we don't always know when we'll be done with a video. Besides, don't you like surprises?
Can you use Cover Blubber in the refrigerator and/or freezer?
Yes you can! In fact, we even mention this at the top of the page in the "Features and Specs" section.
Is this latex?
Cover Blubbers do not contain latex.
Will it work will can sodas
They could, actually. You'd have to use the smaller Blubber Covers.
I put cover blubber over a small dish of garlic butter, and now the CB smells of garlic despite normal washing and a soak in water & baking soda. What can I do to eliminate the garlic smell?
You might have to soak it several times before getting the smell completely out. Some online Q&A boards suggest baking soda, vinegar, or even charcoal (the sort used in water filters).
Is this approved to use in restaurants? I would like to use these in my restaurant instead of Plastic Wrap.
That's up to the owner of the restaurant. Cover Blubber is completely foodsafe but some chefs and kitchen managers are pretty strict about how their food should be stored.
Will it leave a rubbery taste on my fruit?
Nope! Cover Blubber will not leave your foods tasting rubbery.
Do you ship to Scotland?
Yes, we ship internationally.
If you put this on a soda, would it stay carbonated?
Actually, yes! Cover Blubbers will keep your drinks carbonated considerably longer than they would be without one.
How can I get rid of onion smell from these? First use was on half an onion and now I can't get rid of the onion stench. I've washed several times, rinsed w/ vinegar and put it in a baggie with baking soda - nothing worked.
The manufacturer recommends washing them with soap, letting them soak for 10 minutes in vinegar, and then washing with soap again.
How long does it usually last, where it still sticks to the food/container?
Cover Blubber can be used over and over again as long as you don't neglect or damage it. There is no maximum shelf life.
Can it be used on raw meat?
If you put that meat in a container first, sure!
Does it come with all four sizes or do we need to buy them individually ?
Each pack includes four different sizes of Cover Blubber in order to seal items from 3" to 12" across.
Is that reuseable?
Cover Blubber can be used over and over again!
Is it being sticky the way it holds on and can this diminish over time or washes? Sometimes the 'sticky' part of a reusable item just doesn't hold up after 10 or so washes. Will this happen and is there some way to make it 'sticky' again?
They're not sticky as a result of adhesive; they're sticky because the material they're made of creates a huge amount of friction between the Cover Blubber and whatever it's attached to. The "stickiness" will never wear off.
Is it biodegradabale or recyclable? Does it break down naturally
No they do not. Cover Blubber is meant to be used indefinitely and would not make very good food covers if they were capable of breaking down.
Is it at all Sticky?
Not in the way you're thinking. Cover Blubber clings to the dish by way of extreme friction. It's not coated with any sort of sticky material.
If you strech it too much will it break?
Yes, but I think the same can be said of just about anything. It'll be pretty obvious when the Cover Blubber has reached its limit.
Does it have gelatine in it?
No. Gelatin is used in foods. You're not supposed to eat Cover Blubber.
Do they only stick onto melamine bowls too?
They don't really "stick" as much as they grip. Cover Blubber will work on nearly any container.
What's the best way to store these? I don't think a ziplock baggie would work well because I couldn't just slide them out easily. There's no way to hang on a hook. I'm at a loss. HELP??
Whatever is easiest for you. You can store them loose in the drawer or maybe in a container of some kid. There isn't a preferred way to store them.
Can it fit over a crown cap bottle?
That would be just a little too small for the Cover Blubber to get a grip.
Will it have a scent after wrapping it around odoriferous foods?
No. This isn't to say that it won't pick up any scent at all, but it shouldn't be permanent and should wash away when cleaned properly.
Is it oven proof?
No. Do not put Cover Blubbers in the oven.
Does the one that fits up to 3" come in only red?
Yes. For now the only available colors are those you see on the site.
Does cover blubber break when putting something to big?
Not unless you intentionally stretch it past its easily identifiable limit.
Do you have a blubber big enough to cover the WLGB?
Not exactly, but you could put the WLGB in a container which could be covered with a Cover Blubber.
What is the cover blubber made of?
They are made from food-safe StickyRubber™.
Is it dish washer safe?
No. As we mention at the top of the page in the "Features and Specs" section, Cover Blubber is not dishwasher safe and should be washed by hand only.
it would not fit on my watermelon are there bigger ones
We're sorry but we do not have any larger sizes.
is it ok with a deep-freezer? ice room? freezer? refrigerated?
Yes to all of the above.
IS IT refrigerator proof? AND I WANT TO know temperature range PLEASE
We don't have a specific range but the Cover Blubber is perfectly safe to use in both your fridge and your freezer.
Is Cover Blubber biodegradable? How long should it last? if used and washed every day
Cover Blubber is not biodegradable; however, it does have an incredibly long (albeit indefinite) lifespan when cared for properly, so you should be able to get many years of use out of a single set.
Will it fit over the Party Bear?
Nope. Even if it did it wouldn't be necessary because the Party Bear comes with its own storage case.
If cover blubber breaks (when it is stretched too much) can it be molded and shaped into one piece again (like clay)?
No because it's not like clay or putty. Cover Blubber is more like rubber.
I saw that in the third faq that you said most plastic wraps had pvc. Aren't the q men made of pvc?
Yes, but Q-Men aren't supposed to be sitting in your food.
can you sling shot with it?
Technically yes, but we find that they work much better when keeping your fruit fresh. You might want to check out the Pocket Shot instead!
After it is used how do yo wash it so it is ready to be re used?
Your order of Cover Blubber will come with all the information you need to keep them clean, but really all you need to do is rinse them off in the sink.
Is there any particular way to store the cover blubber?
There's nothing special required when it comes to storing your Cover Blubber. You can simply stick them in the cabinet with the rest of your Tupperware when they're not in use.
If I put it on an onion will the blubber smell?
Only if you neglect to wash it afterwards. Cover Blubber is designed not to absorb odors and flavors. In fact, we even have a photo of us using one on the product page!
Will a label stick to it in the fridge and/or freezer?
Yes, however it might not stick very well. You'd be better off putting the label on the container itself.
can you put it in the freezer? if so, how long can it be stored?
Yep! Cover blubber can be stored in the freezer indefinitely.
Dishwasher safe?
Cover Blubber is not dishwasher safe. This information can be found at the top of the page in the "Features and Specs" section.
How long it can get when its fully-streched (Largest)
The largest can seal items up to 12" across.
Do the colors vary?
Nope! Cover Blubbers look exactly like those shown in the photographs above.
Do they contain latex? My mom is allergic.
Cover Blubber does not contain latex.
Does it have an odour?
No, nor will it alter the smell or flavor of the foods you intend on storing.
can I order a selection of sizes Ex 2 x 12" & 2 x 7" etc
We're afraid not. Cover Blubber is sold as a defined set.
Does it have a plastic taste? And if yes, will it affect how the food you wrapped it with, tastes?
Nope! Cover Blubber will not have any affect on the way your food tastes. It will not leave your food tasting rubbery.

We test every single product we carry for several weeks before we even consider adding it to the website. If something doesn't work or isn't as impressive as it should be we simply won't carry it. If Cover Blubber left your food tasting gross we wouldn't bother carrying it.
The jar I have food in is 12 1/2 in. will it stretch out of shape if I put it on that?
Generally speaking, the maximum size is exactly that, the maximum. Going beyond that can either damage the Cover Blubber or prevent it from holding securely.
This is a really strange question but... If I buy this and leave it in storage for 10 years will it dry out or lose its efficiency??
Being left in storage and unused for years may have a detrimental impact on the Cover Blubber's ability to stretch. This shouldn't be a problem with normal use.
What is StickRubber made of?
It is proprietary information held by the manufacturer. Unfortunately we do not have access to the exact chemical compounds they used to create their rubber.
Will it ever snap, or dry out?
Not if your Cover Blubber is stored/used properly.
Is it still sticky after you was it?
Cover Blubber isn't sticky in the sense that it adheres to whatever surface it is put over. What's actually happening is the creation of a great deal of friction between the Cover Blubber and the item being preserved. This is what prevents the Cover Blubber from slipping off.
Would one fit over a fresh cut Dragon Fruit?
Yep! Being flexible means that it will conform to oddly shaped fruits as well.
Can I use it as putty?
Cover Blubber isn't made of putty, so we're going to have to say no.
Can it cover my blubber?
Only if your blubber is protruding outwards from your body, in which case you should probably see a doctor.
Hey, I'm a really big fan of Vat19 and I bought almost all of your products and watched all your vids at least twice. I was just wondering where the name Vat19 came from. Yours truly, me.
You can find the whole story here!
How should they be stored when not in use?
They can be stored along with the rest of your Tupperware and other storage containers. A clean, dry place is all that is necessary.
Is it durable? how many years can i use it until i need to buy a new one?
Cover Blubber is ridiculously durable. With proper care and storage, it should last almost indefinitely.
Can it be used for fruits like Durian?
Yep! In fact, we've already covered this: "Yes, it will work with Dorian fruits. The reason why this works is the same reason why you can lay of a bed of nails and not get hurt, but if you lay on a single upright nail you'll be impaled. It's all about surface area and the distribution of energy."
Does it make your hands feel all sticky?
Cover Blubbers do not leave any sticky residue.
Will it shrink too much and change the food shape?
Not unless you're attempting to wrap something that is very soft, such as a cake or a giant marshmallow.
Does strong scented foods leave a smell on the cover blubber such as garlic, onion or a bowl of chilli?
As long as you keep your Cover Blubber clean after each use you won't have to worry about it absorbing odors.
For use over LED outdoor spotlights for Christmas?
We wouldn't recommend it.
Can I wash it with dish washing soap?
Yes you may, however you are only able to hand wash them. A dishwashing machine is far too hot and would ruin your Cover Blubbers.
Will it rip if I stretch it to much?
They will rip if you stretch them too far but you should be able to tell when it's at its limit.
what are the dimensions of the package pls?
The package that holds the Cover Blubber is 8.5" x 5.75" x 3".
If you put this in a microwave, will it melt or boom or ruined?
Cover Blubber is not designed to go in the microwave or dishwasher. Doing so can ruin your Cover Blubber.
What does it feel like (besides sticky.)
It feels more or less exactly like you'd imagine. It's not sticky like tape, but Cover Blubber feels like stretchy rubber.
Is it okay if I put cover blubber over something hot like a bowl of soup?
That would be fine!
Does it contain real latex rubber? I'm allergic to latex, and probably wouldn't want my throat to close because I ate leftovers covered in a latex tin foil replacement.
I called the manufacturer and the gentleman I spoke with has assured me that Blubber Cover does not contain any latex whatsoever. Blubber Covers are made from a new synthetic rubber called StickyRubber.
If i Put it a 3 size cover blubber on a fruit cutted in half.I saw in the video it sort was slowing slipping. Will it slip off cut fruit like Mango?
It may settle, which is what you're seeing in the video, but as long as the fruit isn't too large or too small you won't have to worry about the cover snapping off.
Will this work with plastic containers where the top of the container kinda curls under?
I'm not sure if I know what you mean, but as long as the containers aren't too large there isn't any reason why they wouldn't work.
How far can each size stretch for without ripping apart?
Much farther than you'll likely ever need to stretch it. It'll be pretty obvious when the Blubber Cover cannot stretch any further.
Dose it lose its stretchiness and/or its ability to bounce back over time? Is it dishwasher safe?
Blubber Covers will retain their stretchiness indefinitely. They are not dishwasher safe, however.
How far Will it strech without breaking?
That is an excellent question, and sadly we have not been able to answer exactly how far these Cover Blubbers can stretch. But we can assure you that they will stretch enough without breaking to cover anything up to 12" across.
If this product ends up in the landfill will it degrade or will it hang around forever like plastic?
Only if you put it there. Cover Blubber is meant to be used over and over again, reducing the need for single-use plastic wrap. Don't forget the Three R's.
Does it come in multiple colour options?
We're afraid not. Sorry!
Can you monogram the cover blubber?
Unfortunately, we do not have the facilities or equipment to offer monogramming.
How tight is the squeeze caused by the cover blubber it looks strong but doesn't squish an avacado?
Like any other elastic material, it depends on how far it is stretched. Cover Blubber isn't so strong that it will squish the very foods it is designed to protect.
Why is it better than plastic wrap?
The first and most obvious reason is that it's reusable. Remember that recycling isn't enough; you have to also reduce and reuse.
This is kind of off topic, but does Jamie get every Vat19 Product for free? Just curious.
Sometimes. More often than not the samples we get are used in the videos and then put into storage.
Is it latex free?
Cover Blubber is 100% latex free.
once my mum made some cup cakes for a shared lunch with the argentina flag on and they looked awesome. but when i took it to school i took the glad wrap of and it stuffed up the icing.wil that happen with cover bluber?
Cover Blubber doesn't repel icing, so yes, it still possible for that to happen.
Do you ship to Ireland?
Yes, we are able to ship to Ireland.
How long it lasts without breaking?
With proper use your Cover Blubbers should last indefinitely.
Will lit stick to your food? For example, you wrap a piece of pizza in the video, but the pizza appears lower than the edge of the plate. If it touched the top of pizza and the cheese was a little warm, would the cheese stick to the blubber thing?
Generally speaking, no, it will not stick to your food in that way. If the cheese is still molten it might stick a little bit, but in most instances where pizza is being packed up for later the cheese has already cooled quite a bit.
How would you store it when not in use?
However you like. Perhaps the easiest way is in a small plastic container (Tupperware).
If I were to stretch it over a bowl, would it be possible for the bowl break because of the squeezing force the Cover Blubber exerts?
It depends on what the bowl is made of. If it's made of paper or styrofoam it could be a possibility.
can you cover a picnic basket?
Perhaps a small picnic basket. The idea is to save your leftovers, however.
Is this a substitute for aluminum foil too?
It certainly can be!
How hard is it to clean?
Not hard at all! All you need is warm water and a little soap.
If stretched far out enough, will it tear?
Yes, but I think the same can be said for just about anything.
Does it get ripped easily? Like will a stem cut through it?
No. As you can see in the video, we were able to safely wrap a pineapple which, as I'm sure you know, are pretty pointy.
is it dishwasher safe?
No. We mention this at the top of the page in the "Features and Specs" section.
Ok but is it REALLY ok to touch your food? My mother thinks its kinda sketchy
We wouldn't risk our reputations and your health with something that could make you sick.
Will it survive when being wrapped on fruits like the Durian fruit and Jack fruit?
Yep! The reason why this works is the same reason why you can lay of a bed of nails and not get hurt, but if you lay on a single upright nail you'll be impaled. It's all about surface area and the distribution of energy.
Did you guys consume the food used in the video?
We may have had a snack or two or three.
Can it rip easily?
No, not easily. It would require a deliberate amount of effort to damage Cover Blubber.
How long can each Cover Blubber stretch?
Far enough to cover most foods, pots, and bowls.
Is this from the future?
Yep! On our last trip to the future we had to decide between Cover Blubber and the Not-a-Cat Cat. We think we made the right decision.
If i have a plate say thats 24 inches big, would it work if i cover half the plate with the Cover Blubber then add a another piece over that to cover the other half.
The set only includes one "large" Blubber Cover, and it's only designed to stretch up to 12 inches. We're not completely convinced that using two would work simply because of the nature of the product. Blubber Cover was designed with the intention of quickly storing and easily moving small leftovers rather than large servings.
What is this stuff made out of?
Cover Blubber is made of a propriety material which is both PVC and latex free. Cover Blubber is made from food safe materials which have passed all requirements necessary to be sold to the public.
Will certain foods (ie with high acidity/alkalinity) degrade Cover Blubber's lifespan? Are there foods you recommended it not be used with?
Not that we're aware of. The manufacturer has made no mention of foods that cannot be used with Cover Blubber.
If i put this over something with a sharp corner could it get a whole in it?
You'll have to use your best judgment.
Could it cover your worlds largest gummy bear just as well as plastic wrap
If you put the gummy bear in a bowl first, sure!
Can i use it to play with? is it fun to play with?
I'd be lying if I said that Cover Blubber isn't fun to fiddle with, but ideally you should be using it to preserve your leftovers.
Can it be used as putty ?
It's not a putty, so it can't really be used as a putty.
Could you wear this as a hat?
It'd be weird and would probably pull your hair, but you COULD do it if you really wanted to.
Can this fit on a cake pan?
Perhaps a very small cake pan, but generally speaking we'd have to say no.
