Overview:

The Sun Jar captures sunshine during the day and fights Lex Luthor from dusk 'til dawn. And by fights Lex Luthor, we mean glows. The Sun Jar includes a solar cell, battery, and LED lights.

During the day, simply store the frosted-glass Sun Jar near a bright window. It will collect and store enough power to glow brightly all night long. A light sensor prevents the Sun Jar from glowing in brightly lit rooms.

The magic of a solar cell in a traditional, frosted-glass jar

The Sun Jar packs all of its magical goodies underneath its lid. Crack it open to access the on/off switch. There's also a light-sensitive eye so that the Sun Jar won't waste all its energy by glowing unnoticed in the middle of a Saharan hotspell. The fancy, blue grid-like pattern is the solar cell.

Dear Vat19, why shouldn't I just buy a candle?

Go stand in a corner. Facing the wall. OK, we'll admit, that was harsh and we're sorry. Q: If I sit on it all day will it stop glowing?
A: Probably. If you block the solar cell from capturing sunlight, then it will not be able to glow at night. But we're betting it would not be fun to sit on a jar all day. Thankfully the unit also has an on/off switch, so you can turn it off if you don't want it to glow.

A: We haven't had any close encounters with vampires around here, so we can't say for sure. But they are afraid of sun, and this is a Sun Jar, so we don't see why not.

Q: Nutrigrain bars=NOT CANDY *cries in corner*
A: We'll have to concede on this point. You're right, NutriGrain bars are not candy. However, it was the only thing we had at the time that is wrapped in bright, shiny, candy-bar-like packaging. Rest assured that the Sun Jar does not come with NutriGrain bars, and you can fill it with whatever legit candy you like.

Q: I plan to use it inside a glass front cabinet in my kitchen which receives indirect sunlight in the afternoon; will it work or will i need to move it into direct sunlight for 3 hrs a day?
A: The Sun Jar should work a bit, but it would work much more efficiently in direct sunlight.

Q: How illuminous is the sun jar? Can it brighten-up a bedroom?
A: The Sun Jar casts a soft light similar to a night light or candle. It would not brighten up a room like a regular lamp.

Q: You said we can " ..leave the Sun Jar outside permanently." Does that include the cold winter months here in New York state? How long will the battery last, and is it replaceable?
A: You shouldn't have any problems leaving it outdoors, although extreme changes in temperature could shorten the life of the Sun Jar's battery. The actual lifespan of the battery would depend on the type and amount of use that it gets, but we would expect it to last for quite a while. Since they're just regular, rechargeable AA batteries, they are replaceable.

Q: How much energy can it store? If you turn it off and leave it in a bright area for several days, would it glow for an extended period of time, or does it collect just a day's worth of energy?
A: The Sun Jar takes approximately 3 hours to fully charge (in direct sunlight). This provides a continuous glow time of about 6 hours. Leaving it in direct sunlight for more than 3 hours cannot extend the glow time. Once the battery is full, it's full.
