Overview
Smencils are the finest smelling pencils you'll ever come across. Each pack of Smencils includes ten gourmet scented pencils. Not only are they made from rolled newspapers, but all components of the product are made from recycled or environmentally-friendly substances.
Each Smencil comes in its own individually labeled plastic tube (to preserve freshness, of course). The tube is made from recyclable corn plastic, so it's eco-friendly, too!
Every 10-pack includes one Smencil each in ten tasty scents represented by a cute character mascot. Available in standard gray graphite and color graphite packs. The 5-pack features gray graphite.

Regular pencils are made from wood, but Smencils are made from rolled newspaper!
The newspaper is soaked in environmentally-friendly fragrances and then wrapped tightly around the graphite core. The ferrules (the metal thingy that holds the eraser) are recyclable and the erasers are biodegradable (of course, this only applies to the standard graphite packs because the color packs do not have erasers).
The Smencil plastic tubes are also recyclable.

Smencils smell good when sharpened
Because Smencils are made from recycled newspaper, you can see the layers of newsprint when you sharpen them. Since each layer has been individually coated in fragrance, even the shavings smell good!

Color Smencils match the "color" of their scent
Color Smencil packs are scented like their regular lead counterparts, but with a twist. Each color Smencil matches the "color" of its scent as closely as possible.
For instance, Bubble Gum is pink; Jelly Donut, purple; Chocolate Milkshake, brown; and so forth.
Not only do you get 10 different color pencils, but they're scented too!

Smencils are available in two different styles: regular or color.
The difference is that the regular graphite pack uses standard graphite and the pencils have erasers. The color packs do not have erasers and the color of each pencil's markings matches the "color" of the scent.

Answer: No, only the pencil itself is scented. Your writing or drawing will be unscented.

Answer: The manufacturer tends to rotate and change the scents fairly often. We list in our text description the most current lineups. That being said, there sometimes can be a variation between packs.

Are these pencils as durable as a regular pencil? It won't bend or break? Being made of newspaper it might be flimsy.
In our opinion, a Smencil pencil is more difficult to snap in half than a regular pencil. The many layers of newspaper are wound very tightly to make the pencil sturdy.
Do the smells wear off?
From what we've been told, the scent lasts for two years.
How much does 1 smincil cost???
Hanging out in the Vat19 warehouse, the Smencils have a tendency to bond with one another. For that reason, we only sell them in packs of 10 for #price#. That means that each one costs 99.5 cents plus shipping, although you'll have to get a full set of 10 to take advantage of that fantastic (and fragrant) deal.

do u have popcorn cherry banana mango and peach?
Nope. Popcorn and Cherry were discontinued, and we have never seen banana, mango, or peach. The scents included in these 10-packs are listed above.
Do Smencils erase like ordinary pencils? My kids do a lot of erasing. :)
Smencils Gourmet Scented Pencils have an eraser like most other pencils, however, as with any heavy erasing, having a back-up block eraser is always helpful.
Is the graphite like your standard No.2?
Yes, the Regular Smencils contain #2 graphite writing cores.
How much will the 50 pack of coloured smencils cost?
We do not sell a 50-pack. If you need 50 Smencils, then you'd need to buy 5 of the 10-packs.
did you used to sell cherry smencils?
The Cherry scent was discontinued, however, there is now a Black Cherry scent.
why has the popcorn smencil been discontinued?
Customers preferred Tropical Blast more than Popcorn.

Sorry, the Smencils are not sold individually. They are available in 10-packs seen here or 5-packs (for the Holiday Scents).
what if smencils dont last for 2 years?
Don't worry, the scent will last for two years. That is if you don't use up the whole Smencil before two years is up.

Hmm, that's odd. There is a cotton candy Smencil in our Regular and Colored pencil 10-packs, and there is a candy cane Smencil in our Holiday 5-pack. It's possible you received a very rare fluke Smencil that was in the wrong packaging. But I would trust the scent printed on the pencil itself, not the tube.

It can vary, so there isn't really an exact time frame we can give you. A few weeks perhaps? Keeping the tubes shouldn't be too difficult.

There used to be a chocolate scented Smencil, but it was discontinued by the manufacturer. We do not have any chocolate Smencils.

Smencils can maintain their scent for up to 2 years. We mention this at the top of the page in the "Features and Specs" section.
Do they come in a tube or a wallet because the picture shows the pencils in a wallet but the video shows in a tube.
They're individually packaged in tubes but the whole set is packaged in a clear plastic package. The zipper pouch is no longer offered.

No. It would take much, much longer than a single day for a Smencil to lose its smell.
How are smencils eco-friendly beside the newspaper?
Smencils are made from recycled materials and even the plastic packaging is biodegradable. I think that qualifies them as being eco-friendly.

Since Smencils are made from very tightly wrapped layers of recycled newspaper, they shouldn't unravel if they get wet. However, this will depend on how wet they got and for how long they were wet.

Probably because the Smencils are soaked in a fragrance, not a flavoring. It would be like trying to flavor water with perfume. Yuck.

The Smencils have passed the CPSIA tests, and thus do not contain phthalates.

Inside or outside of the tubes, the unofficial guarantee is that the scents will last for two years. It's quite possible that the scents could linger for longer than that, though.
Is the fragrance natural or synthetic?
They are synthetic.

Colored Smencils are not erasable, which is why they do not have erasers included.

The original Cherry scent was discontinued by the manufacturer. This set does include a Black Cherry scent, however.

Smencils, both the pencil and eraser, are non-toxic.
Do they help you on tests
This is a good question. Certain scents can awaken your senses and keep you more alert, which would certainly help you on your test. However, the Smencils smells so delicious that you may be distracted and spend the entire exam time with the pencil to your nose.
How strong are the scents?
They're not going to fill a room but you can definitely smell them from about a foot away.
I have the Smencils, but they were not packaged in a plastic bag like you said in the ad, they were packaged in a little pack.
Why?
The manufacturer has updated the packaging several times since the video was shot. Unfortunately we are unable to shoot a new video each time there is a minor packaging change.

They're non-toxic but that doesn't mean that it's safe to let kids stick pencils in their mouth.

Each pack contains the scents listed on the product page and only those scents. They're not randomly chosen.

No, Smencils are not at all sticky.

I don't think it will make much of a difference, though it's possible you might notice some very faint mixing of scents.

Because the Smencils are made in China.

That is a tough question! They all smell great, but I think I'll go with Orange.

The caps/tops can also be recycled.

No. In fact, most pencils do not come pre-sharpened. The reason for this is because the tips would break in transit.
Are the erasers scented, and if so, with what scent? I have one smencil and I thing the eraser smells good.
They might hold a little bit of scent from being packaged with the pencils, but they have not been purposely scented themselves.
Is the bag scented?
The bag is not itself scented, but it's sure to have picked up some scent from the pencils that it contains.
Will the smell disappear after a Long time?
The smell will eventually dissipate if you leave them out. We suggest keeping them in their container to help retain their smell.

It's very similar! I think the scent will be unmistakable.

Smencils are non-toxic, so they are safe for people and the environment.

The plastic Smencil tubes can be recycled. The plastic tube itself does not have the recycle emblem embossed on it, but there is a recycle emblem on the label.

The popcorn scent has been discontinued, and as far as we know, there are no plans for a hamburger scent.

The fragrance oils used to make Smencils are natural and synthetic and are also used in candles and soaps.

There are no allergy warnings or issues, however if your allergy is particularly strong we would recommend avoiding this product.

The exact compounds used to create the perfume are proprietary to the manufacturer, however we can assure you that they are non-toxic and completely safe.

They're made from recycled newspapers! The newspaper pulp is then turned into paper, which is then perfumed and wound around a core of graphite or colored wax.

Yes and yes! If you look at the photos we've provided, each pencil has an eraser already attached to it. The colored pencils, however, are not erasable.
How are the scents created and what are they made from?
They're artificially scented using a variety of safe, non-toxic perfumes.
Is this recycled out of Chinese news paper?
Yes, the recycled newspaper used to make the Smencils is Chinese newspaper. We can't guarantee that you'll see any writing, however, as recycled paper is usually turned into a pulp and then turned into new sheets of paper.
why do you put the smencils in 2 differnt color zipper bags when you could put them in the same color bag?
Because we carry two different styles which are sold separately.

The graphite is not scented. Only the shaft of the Smencil/Smen has any scent.
Does the wrapping by the "tip" have any scent at all? My friend brought a rootbeer smencil to school, She let me sniff it and it seemed more fresh and scented at the tip of the pencil.
Smencils are soaked in their particular scents, so it seems natural that a freshly sharpened Smencil will have a stronger, fresher scent.
do these pencils feel scrachy or weird? I thought so becase they are made with newspaper?
They definitely have a textured feel to them, but I wouldn't call it particularly weird or scratchy.
How come the smell will only last 2 years?
Unfortunately there isn't a smell that can last forever, but two years is a pretty long time. Keeping your Smencils in their freshness tubes will definitely help preserve their scent.

No, the pouch is not made from corn-based biodegradable plastic like the tubes are.

The body of each Smencil is made with newspaper, however, the part you write with is standard graphite just like in most other pencils.

Colored Smencils do not use graphite which is easily erasable; rather, they have a core which is not entirely unlike a crayon. Standard erasers simply don't work.

The plastic tubes are made from corn plastic and can be recycled. As an alternative to recycling the plastic tubes, they can be reused with other pencils. They're a great way to prevent the tips from breaking or drawing on anything while in a backpack or pencil case.

Let me explain recycled newspaper and biodegradable erasers are very ECO? but why...WHY (dramatic shout) are they packed in a lump if plastic each and the lumps of plastic are packaged in more plastic. Not very ECO eh? Marry Christmas or Happy holidays or whatever you like.
However, eco-friendliness is equal parts recycling and reuse. The pouch that Smencils and Smens are packaged in is a very durable plastic that can be reused and repurposed, or if you like, even recycled. Also the tubes are made from corn plastic which is biodegradable.

Smencils do not come with any sort of attachment or adhesive. The Smencils come in a zippered case, so maybe you could tie some string through the circle of the zipper to a ring in your binder. Or you could just make it simple and buy one of those pencil cases that fit inside of a binder.

We do not actually manufacture the Smencils, so we can't give you an exact description of how they are made. Here is our basic understanding of the process: Newspapers are tightly wound around #2 graphite cores. The pencils are then hardened so that they can easily be sharpened. Then they are soaked in gourmet fragrance oils. Once dry, the erasers are attached.
You roll up newspaper and soak it in rootbeer for the rootbeer scent? hows it not sticky?
The root beer pencils are soaked in a root beer fragrance, not actual root beer. I have a feeling soaking them in actual root beer wouldn't give them much fragrance at all. And yes, you're right, they'd probably be sticky.

Probably not the whole room. The scent is relatively subtle.
If "tropical blast" smells like pineapple, then why not call it pinapple like you call the others bubble gum, rootbeer, orange,etc.?
It was simply a design choice by the manufacturer. Besides, "Tropical Fun" just sounds more exciting!

How do you make smencils out of newspaper and make them smell good?
The newspapers are soaked in fragrance before they are tightly wound around the pencil's core.
If I were to carry a few smencils around in my pocket all day at school, would the smells last? Would they rub off on each other?
We think the scents would rub off onto each other if placed in your pocket all day. The freshness tubes are intended to help prevent the mixing of scents and to keep them scented longer. The Smencils would smell still, but it just may be harder to distinguish one scent from another.

No, the erasers aren't scented.

Newspaper is rolled very tightly around graphite and then soaked in a liquid scent to make Smencils. You can't unravel a Smencil to get the newspaper "out".

No, we do not sell Smencils in buckets of 50. However, if you bought five sets, you would end up with the same number of Smencils.
Can I choose the flavors I want in the 10 pack
No, each 10-pack of Smencils includes one of each of the ten scents available. You cannot, for instance, purchase a 10-pack of Cotton Candy Smencils.

The shavings (recycled newspaper) are recyclable. The eraser and the metal piece that secures the eraser to the pencil are not recyclable.
It's very great that they are recycled and biodegradable, but why are they packed individually by plastic?! :(
The Smencils are packaged in corn plastic tubes to maintain the scent and to protect the tips of the pencils.

Smencils are non-toxic, so if you chew on them you will not be exposed to harmful chemicals. The fragrance oils used to make Smencils are natural and synthetic and are also used in candles and soaps. However, the oils used in various bath products can differ by brand.

Newspapers are disinfected and then tightly rolled around the writing core of the pencil. Once the pencil has hardened, it's soaked in its own gourmet fragrance. Pretty nifty, eh?

To the best of our knowledge, there is no lead in the Smencils (not even in the "lead" of the pencil, because it's graphite). As an added note, though, the Smencils do not taste good at all. Trust me when I say that no sane person would want to eat even 1 Smencil.

No. The graphite is not scented. The recycled newspaper surrounding the graphite is what is scented.
